Gonna kill two birds with one...
... one stone here, as the saying goes. First off, the RIO MOW floating tips do have a taper on the front/leader end (or at least they did when I got mine). Second, for 'micro' or conversion rods, a MOW T-8 light floating tip cut to a 5' length - measure back 5' from the front/leader end, cut and install loop - works very well as a floating tip for rods less than 9-10 feet in length and using 300grain or lighter Commando heads. I have used this tip to cast as large of a fly as I thought was feasible for the particular rod being used and for as small a fly also. This also includes bobber, split shot and fly/flies combinations. Of course, adjustments in leader length are necessary... big flies and/or bulky, heavy flies or rigging require short, stout leaders and for casting lighter payloads, the leader should be accordingly lengthened and lightened. As a loose guide, I run 5-6 foot leaders on large streamers or poppers and up to 12 foot leaders for small wets or soft hackles.
