In Sweden the right to repair is expected. Some of the thoughts is attached to other great Swedish companies such as Hasselblad and Profoto that have stood the test of time.

 

Danielsson is the gold standard when it comes to service. They will still work on old reels they made for LOOP 20 years ago, if they have the parts. Their delivery and shipping service is excellent. I'm a vintage Hardy man, and like some other things as well, but if I were to fish with new modern reels, they would be where I would go without question, and their products cover the range from 4" brook trout to sailfish. The only negative is their reels are relatively light, so balance on longer rods can be an issue in some circumstances.

 

I purchased two Danielsson reels last May to take on a rooster fishing trip in Baja and they were on my porch in Washington State in five days. Amazing.

 

My L5W6nine arrived today at noon here in NB Canada. I had ordered it late Friday afternoon (Friday night in Sweden). Three and a half business days from order to delivery is quite remarkable. Only downside is the cost of brokerage and taxes charged by DHL.

 

I should have my new L5w 8twelve Monday according to the last DHL update I received. I ordered it Wednesday. They are an awesome value! My new go to full frame reel now that Lamson has gone so light weight with their HD's...

 

Danielsson just keeps getting better. When I started buying from them, 3 years ago, they were shipping to the states with FEDEX. Not sure when they switched to DLH, we the last four purchases have arrived in 3 to 5 days after ordering. FEDEX usually took 7 to 10 days, which isn't bad and I wasn't complaining, DLH just seems make it happen. Their shipping seems to leave the factory in the afternoon or early evening, the next morning it is in the European hub for shipment to the states. The next day it is typically in their receiving hub in the states and often gets to my house the next day. I don't think their reels are the best reels made, but for the price, I don't believe you can beat the value.

 

Gene I'm curious. What do you feel are the best reels made? Not trying to start a fight, just curious.

I made the statement, "...I don't think their reels are the best reels made," to avoid starting an argument. I don't know who makes the best reels, it likely depends on what you are fishing for and where you are doing it. What I will say is this--if you are looking for a drag reel for two-handed fishing and want flawless workmanship at a very reasonable price, I'd tell you stop looking after you've tried a Danielsson. My L5W 8twelve reels cost around $260 plus shipping, so inside of $290. To find an American or British made reel with the same attributes you are talking at least twice that much. Their single hand reels are unique and I used to drive Saabs, so you can guess that I might be attracted to Swedish quirkiness.

On the downside, if there is one, the method of changing spools on their F3W and larger series might be a challenge for someone with very large hands. The overrun protection on the single hand reels may not appeal to some, but I like the clever way they approach it. Fly reels are like almost everything else in life, our tastes are individual and what floats your boat may sink mine.
