Just a warning to all, I have been quite busy lately (more so than usual) vetting through many new accounts and must say 90% have been banned as Spam. I'm sure I may have missed some too.
Along the same, I've had quite a few PM's from our members here mentioning potential fraudulent attempts against them.

I'm asking that our community here be very vigilant with accepting offers and communication from members that have just joined.
Many of the incidents, both in the past and even recently, despite the warnings, have occurred by entertaining offers from these new joins.
It is a rare anomaly that a new join inquiring about an item in the Classified forum is legitimate.
I ask that if such an inquiry comes into your inbox, or within a thread that you click the "Report" icon to alert the Moderators and Admins.
We have the tools and search features to vet through the accounts.
Never accept to be lead off this forum for communication. Whether through text or email.

Also, if it sounds too good to be true, in this day and age, I can say 99.99995% that it is a scam.
Check the member's status by hovering over or by clicking their avatar. Check the join date. Sometimes these potential scams are within hours of joining. Check the post count, if it's "0", be wary. This is why posting to this forum and developing a reputation here has it's advantages.

Lately we have seen these new joins trying to mimic our members here by using the same username, but adding a period (.) or a number after the username, hoping to mask their identity. Be sure to check these details.

Never, ever give out, or post your mobile number!! Even in word form. Some of these scammers can spell ... there is a human factor behind many of these users, they are not just "BOTS" anymore.

Please be vigilant and use the "Report" feature.

Thanks, Mike. Spey Pages is a special community. We must all work together to keep it that way.

Can the moderators not stop newly joined members from adding email addresses to pm's and also stop links to spam in posts.
I'm not part of the IT team, but from what I know, I don't believe the platform could be modified in that way without removing everyone's ability.
We can check into it though.

Have just reported a scammer that sent me a pm. How can I delete the conversation that dumbo started.
Yes, I got the report, thank you for reporting :)
The 3 dots on the right side of the message can be "clicked" and there will be an option to leave the conversation. When the new window opens, you can select to "ignore" future messages.

Be assured, once you have reported the PM, one of the Moderators or Admins will check out the report and if needed, take appropriate action which may result in a banning as SPAM. These users and IP Addresses will no longer have access to the Speypages.

Been a member all of an hour and have had two scam attempts after reply to a classified listing. Careful out there. I know this doesn't reflect this community.

** Another Update **

Hello friends,

As an update, I have noticed an upward swing again in new joins here with more than 75% getting the boot for high risk potential.
I will continue to error on the side of caution to preserve our community.

I ask our members once again to ensure a thorough scan of members credentials on this forum.
It's been noticed that these spammers are trying to mimic established members here by registering with the same username, but adding a symbol or number to the end of the username.
Most common has been a period (.) or a one (1).

Please check:

  • Join date
  • Post count
  • Quality of postings
  • Info on location
  • Etc.

If in doubt, hit the "Report" icon and I can do a deeper check.

Messages that state to email someone or text message are a total scam!! Hit the report icon immediately and they'll get nuked.

This activity is not just on this forum, it is everywhere lately. Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, etc have been reporting this activity for many years. Identity theft and fraud has been increased lately globally.

Please remain vigilant and stay safe everyone.

My latest post has created a problem. One responder says that he was directed to contact someone by e-mail (not me) How is this possible? Do I need to do anything to protect my account or has it been hacked in some way? i'd hate to start all over on Spey Pages after a run of 16 years with no problems.

Here is the post in question, it was posted last night

Airflo Skagit Heads -All new

Thanks for your help.

Troutfly1 I had same issue. I posted on a for sale ad I was interested in item. Some scammer replied on PM "hey bud he will respond much quicker via email" another clown said I should email him also, both got reported. Needless to say I didn't. Sadly fraud is a multi billion dollar business these days and one cannot be too careful.

Thanks for you diligence on this forum Mike.

Steelpanther, your advice is right on. When making a transaction, my policy is only to use the PM feature and never to correspond on the post. That is where he got the buyers intent and then sent him a bait and switch pm to get him to pay the scammer instead of me. Nothing but scumbag.

S P members have to be wary. Buyers and Sellers have to be vigilant these days with so many fraudsters lurking online. I’ve bought and sold items on the Classified Section here which I rate as a great venue for quality spey tackle.
Regards from the Niagara Bar....Jim

Just wanted to remind our community here to again be vigilant with your personal security and information.

NEVER POST YOUR PERSONAL PHONE NUMBER (even in text form)

NEVER POST YOUR EMAIL ADDRESS (even with spaces or other character forms)

NEVER POST YOUR SHIPPING ADDRESS

The above is meant for posting in threads, not PM's (Private Messages).
If you receive a PM from a member asking you to direct communications via text, email, etc. that is off Speypages site, be diligent. Please note the member's activity level and join date. Members here should be using this forum for communication regarding any transaction or activity that requires transfer of sensitive information. Remember, PM's can only be viewed by the parties involved, even Moderators cannot access those communications.

Please remember, this is a public forum and access to public postings can be accessed by anyone, not just members.
There are individuals these days that base their source of income on scamming others. Over $3.5B US annually is reported to scam fraud globally.

As always, please report any suspicious activity, posts and PM's by clicking the icon located in the upper right hand corner shown as 3 dots. From that, a drop down menu appears with an option to "REPORT". Click the REPORT icon and follow the steps. It takes just a minute or two. The Moderators and Admins get a notification to investigate and take proper actions.

Please help us help you and keep this community as safe as possible.

Hi,

I just received an email from a toba9393, that has Aline I’m looking for, but when I lookup the post, he doesn’t show up & the name doesn’t look familiar. This is the first time I’ve encountered something like this so just in case. I’m not going to reply to this guy in case as well.

Thanks

Bob

Chances are he has no line and just wants your money. Good on you for being aware and not replying to him.

As a newbie to the site I read with interest the heads up posting about scammers. It's nice to know that there are 'guardians' out there who look out for the rest of us. Why is it that there is always (it seems) someone just waiting for the chance to screw up a good thing?

New member here, and I just reported an account that is clearly spam. Tried to run a classified scam on me -- stay careful out there, folks.
Sorry, but I did not get the report.
You need to click the 3 dots in the upper right hand corner of the message. A drop down menu appears and click the report icon.
