Spey rods on the Truckee?

Hey Folks...
I'm heading to the Truckee river over Thanksgiving week and have been reading a lot about techniques for swinging streamers there. Most recommendations are for using a sink tip to get the fly down quick. I was planning on just bringing my 5wt for dries and maybe a little nymphing but now I'm thinking I might bring my spey (Meiser 12'6" 6-8wt Highlander) as well for a dedicated streamer set up. Does anyone up there use a spey rod?

Thanks for any suggestions!

Haven't fished there in a few years, but did a lot below Boca. A 11' 3-6 wt switch rod would probably be a lot of fun. There are large boulders and different current speeds that the extra rod length would help out some. Have a great time.

I am no Truckee expert but, I do fish it often. I too will be up there for Thanksgiving. If you see a white Ford F150 FX4 4 door, with a camper shell, say hi. IMO, a spey rod is too much anywhere between town and the state line. I haven't been into NV so I can't speak to that side. I plan on having my 11'6" 6wt with me for swinging/stripping streamers on a sink tip. I'll also have a 9'6" SH 6wt set up to nymph and in the evenings I'll set up my 5wt SH for dries. As a previous poster stated, we haven't had any rain yet this year so I have to imagine that it is getting bony. And really, most places on this river a SH will serve your needs fine. But, there are definitely spots for the two hander! I would concentrate my efforts from Glenshire and down. Beware of San Francisco Fly Clubs private waters. It is posted and just below Glenshire and stretches I think, to the second spot where the freeway crosses the river. It is a great river but she doesn't give up her bounty very easily! All the best and enjoy!
