R.L. WINSTON B III X (BIIIX) - 10' 4 WEIGHT FLY ROD.
Rod was fished on only 5 trips. The tube has some scuffs but is otherwise sound.
Also in the very last photo, toward the bottom of the grip and center where the grip meets the reel seat, there is a tiny drop of epoxy. I was tying some flies and during a break, I happened to be playing with the rod. I must have unknowingly touched the grip with epoxy that was curing. I was planning to take it off but upon inspection decided to leave it there. If anything, it may have actually strengthened the cork there.
This is a very smooth rod in the Winston vain. I originally purchased it for everything from small dries to big nymphs (including weight on the leader + indicators), and it excelled due to the longer reach.
First and foremost, the rod is a great dry fly rod as expected from Winston. The extra reach is perfect for those longer casts where it is helpful to keep more line off the water to prevent drag and/or for float tubing.
The 10' length also turned out to make this a decent tight line/Euro style rod. While the more specific Euro style rods will do better in their "sweet" zones, this Winston can still hold its own.
However, where this rod shines is in water that lays beyond those Euro rod "sweet" zones. For example on rivers like the Madison in MT, which seems to have the LEAST uniform rock structure of any river I've ever taken a "dunking" on, even with the finest polarized glasses, the best cleats, and the best wading staff, the wading can still be treacherous. Under these circumstances this rod can be very effective. As opposed to attempting to wade into places where one should not go in order to "flick" those Euro sticks, this 10' Winston can make those 40'+ casts up and across with a bunch of split shot, a couple of ginormous stonefly nymphs, and of course if need be - a miniature weather balloon indicator. Thereafter, mending is more easy due to the extra length while keeping additional fly line conveniently off the water to prevent drag.
Finally...when those tan "hydropsyche" caddis start swinging up through the water column and popping through the surface (think Iris Caddis) and/or the PMD spinner falls actually do occur, it's nice to be "casting" this Winston vs. "trying to make it work" with a Euro stick....
