When I engage one pawl and tighten the drag knob all the way, it doesn't have much drag-
I'm not concerned with fish fighting drag, thats what palming is about, but it does seem that it could posibly brirds nest on a hot fish- Also, if I engage both pawls, it just gets harder to reel , and doesn't make the drag any tighter... And, a tiny bit of roatation on the cast , thats a pisser-
Am I doing something wrong, or is it just the reel deal:D

Sounds like your spring is worn - probably from being left tightened down too long somewhere in it's past.. Most Young reels have a very strong/loud check.

You can either find and buy a new spring or try your hand at reshaping yours. Bill Archuleta would be a good place to start for a new spring. If there are none available, then reshaping would be your only bet. I've never done it but I've heard you have to be very careful not to break it. Just a gentle bend, a little at a time, til it makes your click as strong as you want it, then bake it in the oven at a specific temperature for a specific time (I'd have to look those up) - You could probably have Arch do this for you too..

Sounds to me like flipping the pawls over might solve your problem. If the incoming gets harder then the "drag" is actually working for the other hand retrieve. I.e. if you are currently reeling left handed, the drag would actually be getting stiffer, while not increasing the incoming resistance, if you were using it right handed. Does that make sense? I can picture the solution in my head but am having a hard time articulating it.
Try cranking with the hand that you don't normally use. You should feel that the incoming is light while the outgoing has gotten stiffer. If that's the case, flipping the pawls over might be the answer. That being said, some reels just favor a right or left hand retrieve and the only way to alter that is to rebend and temper the springs.

Hmmm....
Well, I'm not to hot at "Tweek'n" stuff, ( Ya think not Guicc??:chuckle::saevilw: ) so I'll either deal with it or send it off I think..... Iv'e messed with the pawls, but it still seems to make no diff in the drag... How do you mean by Flipping them over ??
Thanks for the help guys!

Exciting yes Mike, but you know I don't hook enough fish to take any chances!!!!!!!!!!!!
You turn them loose anyways. The way I look at it once you've moved the fish to the fly you've won. The rest is anticlimatic and just wasting time that could be used to entice another fish to move to your fly. The steelheader's version of counting coup.

Picture yourself running down stream on giant cobbles trying not to break your neck with a freaking out A run on and a hung reel....
Come on, you sound like an old man. Add a little excitement to your life. Hell, it's free.:lildevl:
