Hi all, going to be in Gloucester this weekend for a wedding and may have an hour or two here and there to wet a line. I have googled around the internet and haven't been able to find much information. Anyone have any suggestions for shore fishing? I won't have the time to hire a guide or rent a boat. I assume stripers are the typical target but I am really open to catching anything. Any suggestions for locations, rods/lines, flies ect would be greatly appreciated. I have 8 and 9 weight single handers with floating and sinking lines.

Thanks!

I suggest two places: Joppa Flats, on the Merrimack River in Newburyport and the southern tip of Plum Island, also in Newburyport. The locations are identified on the attached image with the three yellow pins.

Joppa flats can be very productive but is dicey wading, depending on the tide. Be careful and don't allow yourself be caught on a bar during an incoming tide.

Plum Island is a safer choice for wading. The western side is a steep drop-off, so you won't won't be able to wade much above your calves. The eastern side is very rocky, also very productive. You will want to enter the Plum Island Wildlife Refuge early to assure a parking spot. You can also fish after dark if you arrive before the Refuge closes. You are allowed to stay and fish as long as you want. And you will have the Refuge to yourself!

Another location that is fishing well, right now, is Pavilion Beach in Ipswich, MA. It is located west of the south tip of Plum Island. Pavilion Beach may be your best bet, if you have limited time, as it will be easier to get to. There is convenient parking and a few steps to the water. The area is identified on the map. Search for "Pavilion Beach, Ipswich, MA" in Google Earth for a clearer view of the areas.

Here is my strongest recommendation... Hire a boat guide. There is one (the best) right in Gloucester, MA who will get you into spectacular Striped Bass fishing, right now. And he loves fly fishing anglers. Leave your waders at home. Impress other angler guests and bring them along. I can provide you with his contact information if you like.

Here are his rates:
$475.00 - 4 Hrs. - 6 anglers
$600.00 - 6 Hrs. - 6 anglers
$800.00 - 8 Hrs. - 6 anglers

You will, most likely, fish the above described areas. Bring a camera.

Awesome guys, appreciate the info. I definitely won't have more than an hour or two to get away, so a guide is not in the cards. That and I just got back from the keys where guides have become extremely expensive (that's a whole other story).

Am I correct in thinking that this is mostly a low light (either very early or after dark) game, or do I have a chance at anything during the day?
