red hooks

I have tied and fished the Gamakatsu C12-B (red scud hooks). Good producer for me. I like them.

 

I've been trying them for Autumn Atlantics as red is a key Autumn colour & they enhance patterns like the red Ally's Shrimp, red Francis etc. I don't have any firm conclusions as to whether they result in more fish than a black or gold hook etc, but they look good & may be that gives me a bit more confidence - which is probably justification enough.

When guiding in Alaska we used a single red hook when fly fishing for sockeye salmon. Sometimes we would add a small piece of yarn also but often they would take on just the red hook.
I haven't used them for fly tying but suppose that the color probably wouldn't make a difference once the hook is dressed. Just an unproven opinion.

 

Its just a matter of choice i think, some say the black and nickel ones are stronger, i've landed more than enough fish on a #4 gammi red to know that they are just fine.

Dark flies black hook, bright flies red hook.

Bob,
Not just a single hook without dressing, only the red Gamakatsu. Some would argue that sockeye don't take a fly and that you only snag them but the red hook would always be in the corner of the mouth. Who knows if it's the color that they like, only the sockeye knows.

brite flys

orange, red, pink flys i use red trailers. black, blue and purple i use black. i think it only really matters to the angler, but you need to believe in what is on the fish end.

I also use red hooks on almost every pattern, even dark ones however im now going to start using blue trailing hooks for blue patterns. red has worked good im just trying something new now to see if it ups the success


isnt the colour red supposed to be the first colour to disappear in water ???

 

I have a friend in fort bragg who loves colored hooks and is very succesful with them...:chuckle:

 

In the 10 years I lived in Healdsburg, CA (Russian River was 5 minutes away) my most successful winter fly was a size 10 red hook, wrapped with silver, then topped with red Larva Lace (I think that's what they call the stretchie material) If I wanted a bit of weight on the fly I'd add either a red bead or a tungston one.

Worked a charm.

No real preference, interesting thought, seems like it boils down to when I tie the fly and how I feel at the moment. I like a red hook on certain intruder patterns.

Seems like it would be easy enough to conduct a scientific look at this, instead of falling back on 'depends on how I feel.'

as long as its a gammy, what evs. for some reason they stick fish when other hooks wont. I tried VMC for 1 day and managed to pop off 2 fish. and owners seem like they have way to thick of a wire diameter. so back to the gammies!

 

I use red octopus hooks for trailers on my intruder style flies. I do so for one very important reason; it's what they had in at great lakes fly when I was buying materials!

 

I like the way the colored hooks look on trailer trash flies so I use whatever color fits my eye.

i have used all colors ,they all work. but in Canada
getting the blue's and greens is tuff.

some one told me that the red ones don't hold a point very well but there was no jam to the argument.

i have used 2's and 4's on stingers and i have had a few fish straighten the hook on me, so on the advise of a very experienced fella i know, i will be looking into owners. i guess they don't open up at all.

I use the red hooks when I like the aethestics of how it looks to me when tied with a particular patter mostly. Otherwise I use Owner hooks whenever possible because I've never had one straigten out and they stay wicked sharp.
