Airflo 40+ on TFO Deer Creek Switch #6

Hi everyone,

It's all in the title: I'd like to use an Airflo 40+ on my TFO Deer Creek Switch #6 rod and am wondering what weight I should choose. On the TFO site it says Rio Outbound #10 for overhead double hand casting, but a #10 line seems rather heavy to me... (I use a 390 gr Airflo Skagit Switch on this rod).
I will be fishing lakes but also spots on the Pacific coast, so I'm also wondering which sink rate I should get.
If any of you have ever tried this combo, your input would be much appreciated.

Rajeff Sports (Airflo USA Distributor) recommends the 40+ WF7F line.

What about just a head ?

Hey, do you think a shooting head or a short Scandi attached to the Airflo Ridge running line I already have on my spool would work just as well? That would save me the expense of a new spool + backing + Airflo 40+ (which is more expensive by itself than just a head) ...

I believe a Scandi Compact will cast nicer than the Airflo 40+.

We were out today comparing a new Sage 6119 TCX and older Sage 6126 Z-Axis and the distances were amazing with the Airflo Scandi Compact in 360gr.

Did you try the Airflo Scandi Compact overhead casting? That would be my main use for it.

scandi lines are usually at the lower end of the grain window for a rod, so should work well for overhead.

If you are only using the rod for overhead casting, I would drop 20% in line weigth wrt the Scandi lines. Do not forget, half of the line weight is on the water when Spey casting.

The most efficient line weight will require some experimenting with lines and selecting one to fit your individual casting style.
