Warning - An Influx ...

Just a warning to all, I have been quite busy lately (more so than usual) vetting through many new accounts and must say 90% have been banned as Spam. I'm sure I may have missed some too.
Along the same, I've had quite a few PM's from our members here mentioning potential fraudulent attempts against them.

I'm asking that our community here be very vigilant with accepting offers and communication from members that have just joined.
Many of the incidents, both in the past and even recently, despite the warnings, have occurred by entertaining offers from these new joins.
It is a rare anomaly that a new join inquiring about an item in the Classified forum is legitimate.
I ask that if such an inquiry comes into your inbox, or within a thread that you click the "Report" icon to alert the Moderators and Admins.
We have the tools and search features to vet through the accounts.
Never accept to be lead off this forum for communication. Whether through text or email.

Also, if it sounds too good to be true, in this day and age, I can say 99.99995% that it is a scam.
Check the member's status by hovering over or by clicking their avatar. Check the join date. Sometimes these potential scams are within hours of joining. Check the post count, if it's "0", be wary. This is why posting to this forum and developing a reputation here has it's advantages.

Lately we have seen these new joins trying to mimic our members here by using the same username, but adding a period (.) or a number after the username, hoping to mask their identity. Be sure to check these details.

Never, ever give out, or post your mobile number!! Even in word form. Some of these scammers can spell ... there is a human factor behind many of these users, they are not just "BOTS" anymore.

Please be vigilant and use the "Report" feature.

Thanks for trying to keep everyone safe.

I have noticed as well when viewing the classifieds, that often times a new member hours old is asking if items are available. Sellers be careful! Shipping pricey items to first time members could end up costing you. Everybody must be aware in this day and age.

Not saying all new members are scammers, everyone has to start new somewhere, but just be cautious.

Thanks Mike. I'm sure there's all kinds of hard work going on behind the scenes to keep this place up n running and free from intruders. We all appreciate all the hard work.

For what it's worth, I always insure the items I post and ship. Anything of significant value anyway; reels, rods, and such. It's usually only an extra $10 or so. I don't know how much it can protect against a scam, but it does add a little piece of mind on my part and I'd imagine, on the part of an honest buyer as well. I do check on previous activity/posts/reviews as well, that's a must as Mike stated. Also, I do think it's important to take the 20 seconds to leave a review as a buyer or as a seller. Our ability to view past reviews is a tool for us to use to protect against potential scams.

Thanks for heads up. I don’t buy / sell a lot of gear but when I have…. I’ve not had any problems at all. Good to know there are evildoers lurking in the shadows with Mike and other admins policing things swiftly.

What kind of person makes a living running scams on forum classifieds? I’d hold the slime trail behind a slug in higher regard.

Congrats for doing all you can Mike....the rest is up to us to practice due diligence.
The protective measure we can all do that will add credence to the Classified Ads is to complete a review of a transaction. As previously advised, an evaluation of a deal with a SP vendor or buyer, can reward them as legitimate members in good standing and provide recognition of their honesty and expertise.
A background check of postings and activities along with Reviews of members offering or purchasing tackle or services here will help prevent a fraudster from posing as a legitimate speyer and trying to scam one of us.

Regards from the Niagara .. where I’ll confess to regularly trying to entice a trout or a salmon with a fraudulent transaction, the Niagara Smelt, a local pattern here that definitely “is too good to be true”....Jim

I'm not part of the IT team, but from what I know, I don't believe the platform could be modified in that way without removing everyone's ability.
We can check into it though.

Have just reported a scammer that sent me a pm. How can I delete the conversation that dumbo started.
Yes, I got the report, thank you for reporting :)
The 3 dots on the right side of the message can be "clicked" and there will be an option to leave the conversation. When the new window opens, you can select to "ignore" future messages.

Be assured, once you have reported the PM, one of the Moderators or Admins will check out the report and if needed, take appropriate action which may result in a banning as SPAM. These users and IP Addresses will no longer have access to the Speypages.

** Another Update **

Hello friends,

As an update, I have noticed an upward swing again in new joins here with more than 75% getting the boot for high risk potential.
I will continue to error on the side of caution to preserve our community.

I ask our members once again to ensure a thorough scan of members credentials on this forum.
It's been noticed that these spammers are trying to mimic established members here by registering with the same username, but adding a symbol or number to the end of the username.
Most common has been a period (.) or a one (1).

Please check:

  • Join date
  • Post count
  • Quality of postings
  • Info on location
  • Etc.

If in doubt, hit the "Report" icon and I can do a deeper check.

Messages that state to email someone or text message are a total scam!! Hit the report icon immediately and they'll get nuked.

This activity is not just on this forum, it is everywhere lately. Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, etc have been reporting this activity for many years. Identity theft and fraud has been increased lately globally.

Please remain vigilant and stay safe everyone.

My latest post has created a problem. One responder says that he was directed to contact someone by e-mail (not me) How is this possible? Do I need to do anything to protect my account or has it been hacked in some way? i'd hate to start all over on Spey Pages after a run of 16 years with no problems.

Here is the post in question, it was posted last night

Airflo Skagit Heads -All new

Thanks for your help.

Troutfly1 I had same issue. I posted on a for sale ad I was interested in item. Some scammer replied on PM "hey bud he will respond much quicker via email" another clown said I should email him also, both got reported. Needless to say I didn't. Sadly fraud is a multi billion dollar business these days and one cannot be too careful.

Thanks for you diligence on this forum Mike.
