What rod and reel does Barak Obama use?

I'm almost %100 sure he both had a license (amazing how little it takes for people to make nasty comments) - his people would have taken care of that, not to mention the guide, and that the gear is the guide's gear, so sorry no endorsement implied. I'm sure that would be a political faux pas causing "strain in the fly fishing industry" like when Bush I said he didn't like broccoli ... NOT! Though I suppose an endorsement of the guide might be implied. :) Sure, true photo op all the way, but hey, a guy could still have fun at a photo op. So much more fun than the kind where you have to hang out and get a picture with some annoying rich donor, or political fat cat.

Next we need an analysis of his casting mechanics based on the photos.

Gonna say custom? It's got really decorative thread wraps, and the cork has a bit of complexity to it. Probably a gift to the Pres from a builder. I'm surprised no one is critiquing his casting form though. Another question is "what kind of camo are his SS agents wearing so they're not visible"

I'm curious as to the rods Dick Cheney and Jimmy Carter fish. I can see both guys preferring dry fly fishing - with Carter being more of a bamboo & Medalist guy and Cheney using graphite with some cool large arbor reel like a Hatch or Nautilus. Both probably do more fishing than the current POTUS, and I'd venture to say that he is a better golfer than fly caster. He does look to be having fun though, doesn't he?

I must say I am politically fried at the moment...and still approximately 10 months until election day. If the President tried fly fishing and truly enjoyed it...all for the better. That could lead to things that are beneficial to the environment, fish, game and wildlife in general. Just let it go...please!!

All this from a me...a guy who isn't even remotely a fan of the man in the Whitehouse!!!

Cheers,
George

who cares?

Does the type of gear for this little photo op really matter? Looks like he's having fun, which IS what it's all about right? I am of mixed sentiment on the prez; though in all fairness, that's better than I can say about most presidents in my lifetime. I suppose the bar is set low, and American presidents are pretty easy targets for everything that is wrong or going wrong. Politics suck. Either way, I really don't see the point ... and by now I have to say I'm thoroughly over this obsession with our current president. Love him or hate him, the volume of hype has gotten quite absurd at this point and bears less and less resemblance to reality.
Good for him getting out and getting some casting/fishing instruction, time in the stream is good for anyone; even those whose politics you disagree with. If we have to start drawing lines here and separating ourselves by what sorts of political views (or religious beliefs) we probably wouldn't have much of a community at all...
Tight lines to all,
(even those with Obama fixation)

now... can we get back to fishing?

Not to put too fine a point on it, but I'm pretty sure the OP was a "tiny" bit ironic, as in "we are all so obsessed by this stuff, so lets have a silly discussion about Obama's gear". Might have been a little more obvious to some if it was Kim Kardashian instead, but only slightly more silly.

So in that spirit a la light bulb jokes: How many people does it take for the President to go fly fishing?

Quick note to say "thank you" to everyone for keeping this civil. Politics can get heated very quickly. I am with the folks who come to this forum to escape the "news"...be it political or otherwise. However, the "General Forum" is the right place to have these discussions and the key is to remain respectful to one another. We literally have individuals and opinions from around the globe represented here on Spey Pages. What a great community...

When Dick Cheney fishes he needs to have all those people to make sure all the fish are corralled into a confined area. But at least one of the helpers has to go to the hospital each trip with Cheney's hook embedded in them.

I assume any joke about Carter fishing needs to involve a crazed rabbit attacking (I'm dating myself here) ...but I got nothing at the moment.

Reminds me, I long ago saw photos of the Eisenhower room at the Moisie Salmon Club. I guess he was a most serious fly fisherman. There were drawers of salmon flies, not just boxes. And Ashaway fly lines, floating, intermediate, and sinking. I don't know what kind of rods he fished with, but bamboo were in abundance which seems likely since there weren't many good fiberglass rods when he fished, and no graphite.

So I asked him "what are they biting on?"

Then he said "the end of my line"

Jimmy Carter and the NU

Jimmy did some fly fishing on the NU when he was in office. He and Rosalynn were guided separately. Rosalynn and her guide got a steelhead, Jimmy and his guide were skunked for the day!. His picture on the NU still hangs in the Steamboat Inn.

At one time in my life I really wanted to be the POTUS. Later, I realized how much one gives up for the office and wrote that off my list of life goals. Obama and I are the same age - he is now far grayer than me. Though he has more power, prestige and money than I do, I think in life I got the better deal. :smile2:
