Grizzly discovery...

Recently picked up some absolutely beautiful grizzly hackle feathers from a farmer on Lasqueti Island. I don’t often tie hackle-tip wings — but these demanded it. Many of the feathers have long, soft barbules that would also make incredible wet-fly hackles.

We were over on Lasqueti, converting prawn traps for crabbing at a little place we have there. Our neighbour breeds roosters, and my son Johnny loves feeding them, so we stopped by to catch up and see the birds. I couldn’t help noticing how stunning some of the studs were — the saddles, schlappen, and capes bursting with colour, strong barring, a reflection of their rich diet and good life. I asked if he had any feathers lying around, and he quickly came back from the barn with a Ziploc full. There’s something special about tying with materials that are connected to you.

Two different dressings, each using a different grizzly hackle. Have a great week ya'll...🤞

Really nice, first one is just perfect!!

i agree what you said about tying materials that are connected to you.

My dad made 2 finnraccoon furhats to my sisters when they were kids in 1970s, i found these hats few years ago and material was still ok to use, so i cutted hats to pieces and dyed the fur and its awesome tubefly wing material :)
And every time i pick this finnraccoon piece it reminds me about my dad, great fisherman who passed away 8 years ago.

Seriously Matt, you could go to any garbage bin in the lower mainland and pick out 3 or 4 items and tie the sexiest, cleanest looking flies going.
Those are just immaculate as usual. Well done in having that vision while its still on the bird. I think I would only see the barbeque. Cheers

The flies are lovely. However, I would more likely refer to these as Cree hackles rather than Grizzly because of the predominantly brown coloration and not the more typical gray/black/white coloration of grizzly hackles. My best grizzly saddles and necks clearly look grey while these feathers clearly look brown with some shades of tan. Doesn't make the flies less beautiful or well tied, they're just not tied with grizzly IMHO. 😀
