Recently picked up some absolutely beautiful grizzly hackle feathers from a farmer on Lasqueti Island. I don’t often tie hackle-tip wings — but these demanded it. Many of the feathers have long, soft barbules that would also make incredible wet-fly hackles.
We were over on Lasqueti, converting prawn traps for crabbing at a little place we have there. Our neighbour breeds roosters, and my son Johnny loves feeding them, so we stopped by to catch up and see the birds. I couldn’t help noticing how stunning some of the studs were — the saddles, schlappen, and capes bursting with colour, strong barring, a reflection of their rich diet and good life. I asked if he had any feathers lying around, and he quickly came back from the barn with a Ziploc full. There’s something special about tying with materials that are connected to you.
Two different dressings, each using a different grizzly hackle. Have a great week ya'll...🤞
