Hey all,
I’m a bit perplexed on how color choice is determined by season, area, fish species etc.
I’m in the Great Lakes region, and I showed Melinda one of my ties, a Beauly Snowfly. And she said “oh that looks like a great fall pattern!” “Why do you say that?” I asked. She said that the fish like orange in the fall. But another guy said to avoid orange in the fall because it looks like a leaf.
Or how blues and silvers are great in the winter. Why? I can’t really think of many baitfish that are blue?
I’m tying mode for spring drop backs and I keep thinking of more “match the hatch” type patterns. Sculpins, darters, shiners etc but they rarely resemble anything close to the beautiful classic flies we all love to tie, including myself.
is there a rhyme or reason for any of this? I understand that basically anything that looks vaguely life-like presented in the right manner will get eaten. But the tyer in me wants to tie beautiful patterns. However, the angler in me wants to make sure what I’m throwing can have some confidence and logic behind it.
