I have the same rod and really like the Lamson LP 3.5 (discontinued) series.
The new large arbor reels have very small capacity for a spey line and the weight is rather light to balance a switch rod. The old LP 3.5 small arbor is heavier and works great on the Sage 5110 Z-Axis.
I fish a 3.5 Guru on my 11' Beulah and it works perfect and i havent even seen the backing yet. I fish both a skagit line and an overhead line because this is my switch rod. It balances the rod perfectly and holds loads of line. I wont be worried when im beach fishing with it that i will get spooled.
biggest fish so far was a giant chum salmon which caused me to have to warranty the rod but i never saw the backing during the battle, I was the reason the rod broke by my poor landing technique in cramped quarters and by me over extending the rod :tsk_tsk::tsk_tsk:
