I am just in the process of finishing up a 15 foot Meiser. I am pretty proud of how it has turned out. I turned the reel seat myself and the bottom handle knob I turned as well. I want to get a reel to balance the rod and do it honour. That being said I am unable to break the bank. Ideally I would like to work out a trade and cash deal, as I have more fly tying materials and gear then I know what to do with. Please let me know what you have and what you are looking for in trade.

Consider a JW Young. The poor mans Hardy and not anywhere near as pretentious. Made in Engerland just like a Hardy and every bit as durable. In fact they are built like a tank. There are always quite a few on ebay in the UK. Not saying that you should buy this particular one, but here is an example of a Salmon (wide) model that would work great on a 15 foot 2 hander. Right around $100 shipped to your door.....

Well the JW Young is a poor substitute for a Hardy imo. Find a Nice Dingley or my 4" Hardy Perfect in mint condition with papers or even a Speyco reel with the hexhead drag.

Evidently you missed the part where he said he didn't want to break the bank.

I own and fish both Hardy's and Youngs. My JW Young reels have just as many rivets as my Hardy's. Have you ever even fished a Young?

Fish love reels with papers. :chuckle:

Thank you for the suggestions and I have replied to all of the pm's. To clarify, when I said "not break the bank" I meant that in relation to prewar Hardy's, Olsons.... I like to think of what I am after as "Lower, upper end". That phrase kind of describes my philosophy on all fly gear. I like to find that sweet spot between price and function. Some of the gear out there you are paying a good portion for the name.

I believe you want a loud sounding reel as well?

Trade

I have a choice of 3 orvis CFO VI reels and a couple of spare spools, I would also prefer a trade, what do you have in mind?
I should also mention I live in Scotland and am happy to cover my end of shipping.

Thanks.

Hi Zen

Without weighing it I would hazard a guess that it's slightly lighter than a salmon no.2 but with similar capacity, I once used lead core line to bulk out the arbor and weigh it down to balance an older 15 footer I used many moons ago.

Regards

Alistair.
