thompson river steelhead

is the Thompson river open for catch and release for steelhead.....I heard on oct 1 you have to have your class 2 and steelhead stamp to fish the river....when did it first open again I heard it was closed for 4 years once....where can I find the opening date and closing date?

They have changed the law this year the river is open now until Oct 31 and is classified (plus a bait ban) and you must have a classified water tag for the Thompson. If the numbers do not justify it they will close it Oct 31. First update shows an estimate of only 500 fish.

How do they come up with the calculation for numbers of fish? Albian test sets x ??? = ???

Just curious is all.

Don't know the formula but it's actually different if the fish is caught in a chum net vs the Chinook nets (don't ask me why) so far this year the split has been 3-2 but not sure which way which according to the area bio translates into a run of 500 fish.

Then why does it say that all steelhead fishing is closed ......then it says that to fish for steelhead must have stamp and class 1 or 2.......sooooo is it open or not

Thompson River - below signs at Kamloops Lake outlet to the confluence with the Fraser River

No hooks greater than 15 mm from point to shank October 1, 2014 to December 31, 2014
Closed to fishing (not including from the CNR bridge downstream of Deadman River to CNR bridge immediately upstream of Bonaparte River) November 1, 2014 to May 31, 2015
Thompson River - from the boundary signs located approx. 1 km downstream of Martel to the confluence with the Fraser River

Bait Ban September 20, 2014 to December 31, 2014
Thompson River - from the CNR bridge downstream of Deadman River to CNR bridge immediately upstream of Bonaparte River

Closed to fishing November 1, 2014 to April 30, 2015

They didn't update the reg book only had the in season regs changed.

Btw so many people believe it is open till end of dec. Its open for the month of october guaranteed, whether they open it beyond that is fish dependant and there will be a notice

you think they will do this again next year. I heard that they might expand the date and make it fly fish only, also I heard a rumor that they might make it hatchery including further up the fraser

This is definitely a trial, however I would imagine it will be around at least 5 years in order to accurately judge how well the trial works.

I am pretty much going to guarantee that it will not become a hatchery run. There is controversy on the effect hatchery fish have on wild's and reducing fitness, plus a lot of hatchery fish are put in to provide a meat fishery, which the Thompson is not. For example the Chilliwack/Vedder river has hatchery system in place, is managed as a meat fishery but could be so much more if wasn't.

As for fly fish only I do not believe it will. There was a public enquiry period before the new regs went in, and there are a fair number of people who believe bait bans are bs and were voicing their opinion...
