So i'm fishing a dolly lama...big black and white rabbit with heavy cone head on my B&W switch and T8 tip...looking for big dollys in deep pools...and I have been just hammering wild bows left and right...Now I'll admit that's a real blessing and i am thrilled by it...but goddang it...opportunistic or not..what the hell are they doing???

Can you imagine going into some fine montana trout water and swing a pig fly and cleaning up behind all the hatch matchers? Makes no sense sometimes...could go back down with my boo single hander and stimulator and catch salmon next...Gotta love this chit...

Yup, been there and been called rude names by the hatch matchers (only it was some fine Ontario brown trout waters). Sometimes we just have to go with the flow.

I guess I am confused why it is a big deal or why someone would get upset? Just matching what the big fish eat. You would have to be taking yourself a bit too seriously to get upset about how someone else fishes their fly. That is why I always "practice" casting my two-hander on my favorite trout stream with a streamer or muddler; end up with some pretty nice fish. X- really nice fish btw!

the dolly is probably the number one most commonly used streamer for rainbows in alaska, I will bet you would be very hard pressed to find ANYONE fishing for rainbows that doesnt have a few in their box (before september that is, then they are all beaders).... I have taken MANY huge (and small) rainbows on the dolly llama, I tie mine about half the length of store bought and a tiny cone as I hate throwing that much weight. Still catches just as well.

Because I was catching fish and they weren't. Worse I was catching fish in water they had just left, using "gasp" streamers! I've actually been told by a guide to move on because I was "scaring" the fish. This was quite a few years ago and I'm now on friendly terms with that guide, but at the time he wasn't too impressed with me catching fish after fish on streamers within eyeshot of his fishless clients.

Actually, at the time I got a kick out of their discomfort. It didn't bother me in the least. :saevilw:

Light Spey Rods & Trout

"Can you imagine going into some fine montana trout water and swing a pig fly and cleaning up behind all the hatch matchers?"

Yes.

When I was a Fly Fishing sales rep, I was preaching & demonstrating about how fantastic a tool light spey/switch rods were for trout. Most said "no, you don't need two handed rods for trout fishing". Funny, even the Headhunters crew finally "got it" & even made a video on spey fishing for trout- "Down & Across in Montana" - great video John A.!

I totally find it as much fun to have a 6 1/2 lb. trout "TUG' on my 4 or 5 wt. as much as a 12 lb Steelhead on a 13' 7 wt + there is no one else around! ! If you have fished a lot of Steelhead and done your fair share of Trout fishing you will understand what I mean. It is an arcane niche in the fly fishing world & way fun & rewarding for anglers who "get it".

When the hatch is on and the little fish are rushing around eating bugs, the big fish occasionally eat little fish that are too focused on bugs.

Big and black for rainbows is the coin of the realm here in AK (unless you are fishing flesh), but for some reason this hasn't caught on in the lower 48...which is probably why those fellas on the Madison were lookin' at me and my spray pole very suspiciously a few years back. Especially after a few two-footers magically appeared at the end of my line.
