Is there a way to test cast a blank without gluing the cork grip and reel seat on? I have an opportunity to try some blanks but do not want to glue them up if I dont care for them and I definately dont want to break anything.

Thanks.

No idea what 'blank' you're playing with BUT!!

Contact Steve Godshall (SGS here) or through Bob Meiser web site (can't find his phone number on the disaster of an office desk:saevilw:) and, with rare exception, he can give you 'route and verse' on the thing. When it comes to lines/rods HE IS THE MAN!

I just test cast my ARE 13ft 7/8wt, the guides and ferrules wrapped but not finished and my grip and reel seat epoxied in place. I would never try to put any bend into a connected blank without the ferrules wrapped, that would be asking for trouble. As for not securing the grips and seat, it should be possible to use masking tape bushings to make a tight fit enough to get some test casts in. I have heard of guys using tape to hold the guides in place as well to test cast, but I would again mention do not attempt to flex a blank without the ferrules wrapped.

if a blank needs ferrule wraps it's poorly constructed..

to test a rod without building it.

get yourself a large piece of fiberglass blank build a handle on it with a tab of fiberglass out each end you can then tape on the handle and tape on the guides. heck you can even fish.. as you are casting it however you'll have to take into account that the butt will be a little softer after you remove it and will be lighter over all

I would recommend at least wrapping the ferrules. I've assembled rods without epoxy to were they would well enough but have not actually cast them unfinished. So it is possible to assemble the handle and seat components in away that they are tight enough for your intent without tapping or epoxy.

TFO is the one company that I'm aware of who does not wrap the ferrules on some of their manufactured rod. Those are coated with rod finish but not actually wrapped and are covered by the warranty that way. Coincidently: I have a CFB blank section to assemble and wouldn't think of putting the rod together and bending it without at least wrapping the ferrule for putting it, and no doubt another $75 at risk.

Long Hammer,

We will normally pre-test blanks in development without totally building them ...

Have done this many hundreds of times as a matter of course.

We use EVA casting rod grips of various lengths that can snugged on and off, snug the reel seat with under wrapped painters tape ...

... Secure the guides with automotive detailing tape onto the blank, hot melt glue on a tip top, and go casting.

Even had a short fight with a nice Rogue Summer Steelhead that got his teeth tangled in the casting yarn one time ...

Tore off several of the taped-on guides in the fight before he broke free ... };^) ... !!!

Rob is right <> If a blank MFG. states that their female ferrules will depend on thread wraps for integrity ... It's a very poor quality blank, and I'd not use it as it will eventually fail.

... But if still concerned: Try this <> We'll use a couple turns of nylon strapping tape at non-flagged ferrule sections to temporarily reenforce them.

This works just fine for the short haul.

Sure, there is.

I have done this many times.
  • Tape on the guides. This also gives you the chance to move the guides to get them in the best possible position. Guides will have small burrs which may make small scratches on the blank finish, so work over the guide feet with a fine abrasive paper etc.
  • Tape the female ferrules. Electrical tape is fine.
  • At the position of the reelseat, tape on a reel.
  • Tape on a proxy cork handle. Flexible insulation for pipes is fine or just wrap on and tape pieces of an old towel.
  • Use your imagination, that`s why you have got it!:)

Hope this helps
Knut
