Tied on size 4 talon hook. I asked the wife for 2 colors and oddly the 2 colors were brown and olive. I said great, those are good colors for catching fish! then i had to find materials that worked, but I wanted a different build than usual. Lots of inspiration here from Jin's flies and the way he finds different fishy materials to do the same jobs as what we are used to seeing.

an example is the cdc tail instead of GP. CDC tails look amazing in the water, you must try one. I've really been focused on tail design lately. this one has the cdc, with some bird form my yard, and a couple pheasant tail "horns" because i like the shine of pheasant.
then i did something different things with the wing. used a KF feather for the sides and I'm practicing Macaw horns, I think these horns turned out nicely.

Although I don't fish much anymore, I've always found that natural colors used on smaller hooks really work well for me when I'm fishing over experienced fish that have run the gaudy gauntlet. Looks like a winner to me, my friend.

Mr Gotz,
Glad to see you around. Your input and advice has been major inspiration for me, but lacking as of late. Thanks for the kind words. I'm having fun with my tying lately. really just "wingin it" on every pattern...

Best

hey man, thanks for the comments. whats a bidy hackle?

basically hackle is a greyish brown from a hen, then a light brown at the collar. but i also used an ostrich feather as a following rib, so theres a bit of that action goin on too.

Well done, Matt! Take a picture of that beauty on a clump of wax, and I'd swear Jin tied it himself. Excellent job of capturing his style- with a blend of your own as well!!

Also, I'm guessing "bidy" was meant to be "body". Took me a bit to realize it myself.

Thanks for sharing another great tie,

-Bill

Save for high/coloured water I can't think of the last time I used a fly on a hook larger than a #4.

The color selection just seems right to me in gin-clear water summer and fall and for those cold-snaps in winter when the waters drop and clear-up. I don't know for sure but I like to think the fish get used to the hot-rocket red that most others (all inclusive) are tossing. Besides, the "sub-dueds" have cleaned-house too often to be ignored. There is definitely something to it.

I've witnessed small size-flies attract steelhead while a large offering will actually drive them away in those conditions also. Although in streams with SRC's throughout the NW, in late Aug-Oct they can be pesky at times.

Anyhow: A nice fly well put together. One to be poached.
