Does anyone here swing a single small soft hackle nymph on a scandi? Or would that be too small of a fly for a scandi?

yes...

size 12 and 14 on a 275gr Scandi w/ floating polyleader. Sometimes drop a midge pupa off the back.

Not a soft hackle nymph, but I've caught Atlantic salmon on a size 14 irish shrimp swinging on a long belly in Russia. Don't know why it wouldn't work.

Yes, for a deeper swing (not deep) use a fluorocarbon leader.

Swinging softies

In the fall, I fish for migratory browns and rainbows in Montana with softies ranging from 10's to 6's. usually on 2x strong hooks 1x or 2x. I use a 10 ft poly floating off th3e scandi with 3 -4 ft of 3x flouro. My favorite set up is a Beulah 11'7" 5 wt and it covers all the water one could want in these settings: Missouri, Madison, what have you. I also like it for landlocks in Maine swinging 14's and 16's off 5 and 6X..So the word is "easy does it" and have a ball!
