Having fished small west coast streams near tidewater for decades, the approach used is appropriate. I have used and still use the same approach except I my floating line is my "indicator", which is not as effective. Also I will tend to use a simple yarnie instead of a traditional fly due to boulders and shale structure in canyon water. This is not traditional swinging water. Some of my most memorable steelhead are from these small systems in tidewater.

Pretty stream. Would love to see it and it's neighbours first hand one day. You west coast guys are lucky to have fishable water through the winter. A tough go here in the Great Lakes right now.

So can you swing these small Oregon coastal streams or does their size and channel form just not make it practical? It looks like a typical small Ontario switch rod swinging stream to me (except with much nicer scenery).

Nice stream for sure. Makes me wonder though where "fly fishing" starts and stops. The fellow in the video is equipped with a giant moonball float, huge split shot and a box full of lead eyed jig like dressed hooks. Seems like we have crossed the line of our tradition in order to hook every fish in the pool.
I understand the enthusiasm to hook and release fish...but really.
An excerpt from the BC Angling synopsis.

fly fishing ... angling with a line to which only
an artificial fly is attached (floats, sinkers, or attracting devices may not be attached to the line when fishing is restricted to "fly fishing only”).

Not judging here, just musing.

Cool video and crazy effective technique.....But is a Ping-Pong ball indicator and 3 splitshot constitute fly fishing? Just grab a frigging gear rod......

This is not fly fishing in any sense of the word:

There are 3 snippets of film where the fisherman appears to cast a conventional fly rod, line & fly, but with no result.

The 'success' comes with casting a huge ball float (indicator), with split shot on the leader, and a bright pink egg "fly" (albeit with a fly rod, fly reel & fly line).

The stream is boulder-strewn with a good flow, and sport would be ideal without the need for the lead, bouyant indicator and spawn-on-a-hook.

These sort of guys should save themselves $1000+ on equipment by using a spinning/bait rod ($60), a spinning reel ($30) and monofil line ($10), and then they could afford hundreds of extra spawn "flies", lead weights and ping-pong balls. They could even call it 'fly fishing' if they wanted, as it appears that a blob of fluo yarn on a hook qualifies as a fly in some eyes

The piece was well done and yeah it's a lot of indicator fishing but I was there at one time too . Then on my journey, I evolved into swinging flies on two handed rods . This young man may well be on his way to doing that also . What's important is the respect for the water and the handling of the fish and I think he did a fine job of that . No problems here

Very cool video, well done. I felt it captured the feel of some of those lonely costal streams in the winter. WTF difference does it make wether or not he had an indicator on the line or not? Honestly, I fail to see why anyone would get so bent out of shape about anything in the video with the possible exception of the fish out of water shots. Better fish handling than most videos, but I could still do without the quantity of out of water shots.

Other than that I thought it was great, indicator, "Babine Special" and all.

Yes, great video, thanks, as for the fishing method as long as it's legal I am good, I gave 4 years of my life for these freedoms so enjoy!

I have no objection to the method, as it appears to be legal for these streams. What I object to is the use of the term "fly fishing" which is used in the subtitle and the explanatory text for the video clip, as 'fly fishing' it ain't!

Whoa! This should get very interesting quite soon. I happen to agree with Speyducer, but that's as much as I'll say on the subject.

Do you consider anglers fishing with indicators for trout to be fly fishing? I rarely hear an objection to the definition of fly fishing encompassing indicator tactics as applied to trout fishing in most of the world. Why does the definition of fly fishing change due to the mere fact that these particular trout are anadromous?

The only 'indicator' for trout (brown, rainbow, speckled etc) is the dry or
'in-the-film' damp fly - and the indication is when the fish rises to take it and breaks the surface.

Of course, one can look at the end of the fly line or leader to indicate the light sip or take of the subsurface wet fly....;)

has nothing to do with arrogance it has to do with reality.

fly fishing is fly fishing gear fishing is gear fishing both are perfectly ok just choose one or the other.

catching a fish this way is nowhere near the accomplishment that swinging a fly is if nothing else it's a greater accomplishment for having to prove your character through perseverance.

There's nothing wrong with the video. I have a problem because this is the SpeyPages...not the IndicatorPages.

The post was also quite marketing oriented which I don't believe is in the spirit of why people post videos on this site.
