Planing a trip from the Canadian side or the Sault this year for Atlantic's. Would really appreciate the name of a knowledgeable guide who I might contact. I had a bad experience with someone a few years back and am a bit nervous. Please pm with anyone you've had a good experience with. Thank you.

Does boating guide trips at the power dams..... as well as wading in the rapids proper; ----is extremely experienced at the wading; i.e. where newbies are supposed to hop to-- and what to avoid.

Second Choice:
Brad Petske
906-458-8125; though I havent fished with him, he's been there every time I go and puts a lot of time in.
Note: there is no specialization in fly fishing......he is a local guy and knows where they are any given day.

And anyone that is recommended by Karl Vogel.

Nuff said.

I would be careful with putting all of your hopes on the rapids. If they have all of the gates open like they did this year, there is little chance of you being able to wade the rapids. it is a challenge at the best of times.

Brad Petzke

I have fished with Brad (although not on the St Marys), and he is an innovative fisherman and a great guide. Fished with him on the UP and had great time.

There is a guy who owns a fly shop in Sault Ste. Marie who really knows his stuff on the rapids and also does some fishing from a boat below the rapids. His name is Brad Hodkinson and owns Soo North Fly shop.
When the gates are closed, its is a very nice river to fish any time of the year. there are always some type of fish in those rapids 365 days a year.

as I have heard the first nations Gitxsan demand a fee for fishing and enter theirs land at the Kispiox river. Does anyone knows, if the fee is negotiable? We are a group of four fishermen and 2.800 Bucks per person is a lot of money. Can anyone give me a contact to reach the Gitxsan office at the Kispiox river?

I've fished with Brad Petzke for Atlantics.
He does not fish the rapids as you have to have a Canadian license for that.
He fishes the power houses.
Had a great time, caught a bunch of Atlantics, a steelhead or two and a bunch of whitefish which we kept and boy they do taste goood!
Beware that the fishing for atlantics to be successful involves a couple of different techniques all out of a boat.
Nymphing under a indicator, nymphing with just a straight line, casting and stripping back streamers, dead drifting "unconventional" streamers, trolling streamers and stripping streamers at the same time and hopefully you'll see some atlantics busting the surface after bait fish. When they are busting the surface its a hoot, The guy I was with hooked 3 fish on one cast while they where busting the surface. I'd say that there is almost nothing as exciting as seeing your streamer laying in the water 10 ft from the boat, twitching it and having a 10lb atlantic smash the crap out of it.

Brad knows his stuff on the Atlantics in the St. Mary's, just be aware its not your typical fly fishing.

Brad Hodkinson at soo north knows the river. If the gates open again, like the last two years, wading will be out of the question past the berm, unless you're nuts. He does boat trips.
