Shooting head and sink tip design and info

Can anyone recomend a book or website that has extensive (and good) info on making one's own shooting heads and sink tips?

My understanding is that Steelhead anglers are the both the originators and true perfectionists of these types of lines and there is much info on the subject available...looking for a place to start.

I have been FF for a few years and am familiar with heads and tips but am now looking for some in depth info and understanding of the design, make-up and use of these systems.

Thanks in advance for your help,

Hey MattS...

A search on this forum using the words "shooting heads" will get you a lot of info. A search on "Google" using the same terms will do the same. Dan Blanton's board also has a great deal of info. Take care, MJC
History of shooting heads

Start with www.ggacc.org select "history"

Shooting heads with monofilament running line originated in 1946, for distance casting, with the members of the Golden Gate Angling and Casting Club, San Francisco. The members immediately adopted the method for steelhead fishing California's coastal rivers.
Trey Comb's "Steelhead Fly Fishing" has infomation on shooting heads, if you want it in book form, but people are right: you will probably get more from the web, including looking through past posts on this site.

A guy out here, Lance Wedlick used shooting heads, cut from a DT line in 1947. I'm not sure where he got the idea, I'll have to read the book again. Max
