I have been working with the DSR and some of the local fly shops to try to plan a speyclave on the Salmon River this year.

We have received a good response from a number of manufacturers so far and think that it will become a reality.

We are targeting August 20 th which is a Saturday. There should be minimal pressure on the river at this time with the chance of a few early Chinook swimming through.

I'm hoping to have more details in the next week to two weeks. I will post updates on the forum as plans become solid.

Right now I'm trying to guage interest from guys on the forum. Let me know what your thoughts are.

If a Salmon River Clave is held in August, does that mean there will be no clave on the Catt this year?

Juro planned the Catt Clave last year so I assume he will do it again.

I convinced the DSR to go ahead with this because the site is perfect for this type of event. Controlled access, a lot of parking, a lot of water for demonstrations and centrally located between most of New England, NJ, PA, most of NY, and a good chunk of Canada.

I'm also hoping it will attract guys who frequent the river but haven't tried spey rods and wet flies. Grow the number of guys up there who are comitted to traditional techniques.

The other nice thing about the DSR sponsoring is that they have no vested interest in one rod company over the other. Everybody gets an invite and are welcome to attend.

I'm hoping in the next week to put up names of presenters and companies that have committed. Some I just recently contacted once we decided on a date and I want to give them a chance to respond.

Brief Update:

Rick Kustich has agreed to a demonstration and will be representing Winston Rods with their new spey line present. He will also be representing West River Publishing. Rick has published numerous books and articles about spey rods for GL steelhead.

Scott rods has committed and will be sending their rods plus Ted Lewis form their pro-staff. Ted has fished the Salmon River and speciffically the Douglaston with spey rods substantially.

Nick from the Oak Orchard Fly Shop will have Thomas and Thomas rods available for trial and demonstration.

A number of other groups are interested and I will continue to update as information becomes available.

i would like to add two things: first that this will be everyone's/anyone's event, open to all, reps, instructors, manufacturers, shops whatever. Gillie has gotten it started but everyone is certainly welcome to promote or participate and in fact encouraged to do so and make it a great event.

second Rick Kustich's demo will be on fishing the two handed rod as opposed to just casting. techniques for the GL, flies, weight, lines and all the rest. i'm sure there will be plenty of casting demo's and we want to make it a bit more instructional also. i will get him to sign up and give a full account after the hendrickson's on the big "D" this weekend.

I'm new to this board. I've had a 13' Winston for a few years, but I don't have any friends that speycast so I don't get any casting tips from them. I was instructed by Rick Kustich when I got the rod, but that was a long time ago. What exactly is a Clave, and would that help me improve my technique?

A clave is a gathering of anglers who are interested in spey casting. There will be casting demonstrations and guys are always willing to help each other.

It should definitely help your casting. It is a great opportunity to get different perspectives.

I also know that some of the presenters will be available for private classes before and after.

Salmon River Clave Date ?

Am I correct that Aug 20 is the firm date for the clave? I plan to attend regardless of date but wanted to be sure . Maybe we should get a "sign-up" sheet started and get added info for local accomodations, camping etc.

August 20th is firm. We are hoping to have an agenda on the forum by the end of May. We want to give at least 2 months for guys to make arrangements.

Lake Ontario Steelhead Association (LOSA) is helping with the planning and we are hoping to have some local lodging / camping information available along with who will be presenting / present.

LOSA is a great organization that has been working hard to improve the steelheading on Lake Ontario. I'm glad they are getting involved.

Looks like you have started to get things lines up in good order. Do you have any idea of the number planning on attending? As I will probably drive up at "O Dark Thirty" on Sat morn will you be giving directions of where to meet and what time? Looks like Rt 81 is the way to go but will need help from there. Looking forward to picking a bunch of brains for help and will enjoy putting faces and names to "Spey Page Names". Speaking of Spey Page, can Dana and crew supply info to aid in recruiting new members? If there is anything that I can do to help please don't hesitate to ask. Thanks again for organizing this clave.

Where do we stand on the plans for the 20th? Can you post directions to area from Rt 81? Do you have any idea when things will start to get going on Saturday morning? Never been to a clave so may be asking a bunch of "dumb" questions. Thanks for info.
