Trying out my new first spey rod. Sage 12ft 5wt with wind cutter 5/6 floating. I am having problems when bringing the running line 1ft past rod tip as rio sujects. Not sure if the rod does not have the backbone for it or it is my lack of exp. When I shorten the line some I do ok. I also notice that if I bring all the line I have out straight up stream and not a U shape on a double spey I do better. Whats up?

I will defer to those better skilled for the second question on your double. For what its worth, the biggest problem I see with new casters on the double is bringing the rod up instead of sweeping around and then up.

As for the first question, try to keep the color change a foot or so inside the guides. The extra couple of feet won't make much difference in casting length but it will be night and day on the ease of casting.
