I bought a xlt used (cast a few times) from a local shop owner because he didn't like it. He didn't tell me he cut it off at ~97'. I assume, because he doesn't get the whole spey thing, that it was to fit on his reel not so he could shoot backing. For me it kinda sucks because I can pick up about 100' of line and I don't want to be holding backing. So my question to you line gurus is can I easily add 30' or so of running line? What running line would I use and where would I buy it? what splicing method? How much is running line? Maybe I will just take it back if it is too much trouble.

I have some customers that chop and resplice XLTs almost on a daily basis as the mood strikes them. It seems those damned XLTs are always either gaining weight or loosing it in the night. It takes at most 20-30 minutes or so. Anyway it is quite simple using the method Dana describes in Custom Lines.

As for running line, maybe that fly shop owner still has that running line. I may have something laying around here that would be suitable for you to use. If I find something I'll send you a PM.

I have cast a few XLT's with mono type running lines grafted on and the results were awsome:Eyecrazy: dont ask me how they did it though as I was
so freakin giddy about the casting that I forgot to ask how they were spliced.
Some airflo poly xt would be nice also.
