SPEY CASTING CLINIC

DATES: MARCH 30-31, 2002.

INSTRUCTORS: Steve Choate (aka "Last/Longcaststeve) is an internationally know spey caster and is one of the featured casters at this year's Sandy Spey Clave. His name is often mentioned along with a handful of the world's best spey casters.

Way Yin M.D. (aka Spey Bubba) is almost as widely recognized as Steve and is also among the top spey casters in the world. When not spey casting, Dr. Yin is the Medical Director of Interventional Medical Associates of Bellingham, WA.

LOCATION: Denmon Bar/Modoc Ponds on the Rogue River just north of downtown Medford, OR. There will be instruction for the participants on Sat with video taping. Sat evening we'll have BBQ at sponsor's place with video play back/instructions. Then back on the river on Sunday for more hands on.

COST: for the weekend will be $250 including two continental breakfasts and gourmet riverside lunches and one dinner. Max enrollment is set at about 10 students. (Doesn't make that $250 sounds so bad now does it?)

EQUIPMENT: provided by Sage and Scott rod companies. If you ever wanted to try spey casting without purchasing equipment here is an opportunity.

B]PROCEEDS: ...96% OF THE 'TUITION FEE' WILL BE GOING TO YOUTH ORIENTED FISHING PROGRAMS. AS THE FUNDS FROM THIS PROGRAM WILL BE GIVEN TO 503C CHARITY GROUPS YOUR 'TUITION' MAY WELL BE FULLY TAX DEDUCTABLE.[/B]

CONTACT: [email protected] or (541) 857-0700, (541) 734-2714

Subject: class schedule

Day one (Saturday 30 March) Denmon Bar/Modoc Ponds river beach.
0800-0900: breakfast, introductions, distribute handout
0900-1200: brief history, demonstration, instruction on switch cast, single spey (river left)
1200-1300: lunch, demonstrations
1300-1530: go river right, instruction on snake roll, double spey- (Little Butte Creek access across-down river)
1530-1600: recap, review
1700-1800: video review of days casting

Day two (Sunday 31 March) Denmon Bar/Modoc Ponds river beach.
0800-0900: breakfast, review of questions from first day
0900-1200: river left, review and refine single spey, instruction on circle cast, square cut, snap-”t”, distance tips, sinktip fishing
1200-1300: lunch, demonstrations, single hand spey casting
1300-1500: river right, instruction on backhand techniques, etc. (Back across to Little Butte Creek area)
1500-1530: debrief, final comments, adjourn

I will edit video and provide master of class video to sponsoring shop/organization, up to shop/org. whether to make copies for students (very popular).

During class you will be limited to 'yarn' for fly casting practice. Two major reasons: Too darn many fish running under your nose at that time of the year in the upper Rogue. And we don't want anyone 'hooking' a fellow student. At lunch/after class I'd recommend you have an Oregon fising license.

Post script to the Casting Clinic location.

Took a 'late lunch' at 330 pm yesterday, on river fishing by 4. By 630 had hooked/beached 4 winter fish (1 hatchery + three natives). Another 'good' reason why "no hooks" during class .... too many possible "distractions."

Tuition checks:

Make them out to Frederick Evans as I'll be setting up a special account here at Key Bank to cover the 'nuts' and for drawing cashiers checks to distribute the proceeds.

As said before!!!! To all. If you can supply me with the name, phone and or e mail of groups that provide active ongoing youth oriented fly/fishing programs for kids I'd greatly appreciate same. Only requirement (other than it's an active ongoing program) is the group MUST be 503c tax exempt.

The funds distributed out of this class are not ear-marked just for Oregon programs!!!!!! Speak up you Mid-Westerners-East Coasters!!

Tuition Checks to

Flier available

I have prepared and sent out a flier for the Rogue River Spey clinic with Steve and Way. I mailed fliers with cover letters to: Ted's Sports Shop, Kaufman's, Kiene's, The Fly Fishing Shop(Welches, OR), Bob Marriot's, Madison River Fishing Company, Four Seasons Fly Shoppe. If any one has other suggestions for likely suspects send me an email.

Freddie, Freddie, Freddie,

I'll bet you tell great fish stories! Those are kind remarks, but I am just a steelhead fisherman that loves spey casting and teaching others .... and in that arena I tend to follow Ways' lead in the classes...He is a much better spokesman than I. I do promise that everyone will have a good time and I am sure we can refund anyones tuition that does not...As far as internationally renown...I have a couple wonderful fishing buddies in British Columbia....does that count?

Thanks again Fred,

looking forward to the class!

Steve, don't be modest------

While you may or may not be a world traveling spey caster, I think Fred's use of the term "international renown" in discribing your casting ability is right on the money since that ability with a spey rod was mentioned many times on Dana's International Spey casting board. Hell, we've even heard of you over here in north Idaho

youth orginazations

Fred,

Great job of putting this together.

Please check out The Fly Shop in Redding Ca, www.theflyshop.com They have a neat kid's camp That I think you may be interested in. Week long teach kids to flyfish and tie flies. Mel Kreiger is involved as a teacher. I don't have their current catalog but you can check their website or call for details. Also, I think a lot of the bigger ccities like L.A. and San Francisco etc have some kind of program to teach kids about fishing.

Passing the word.

Rick, I've already talked to Rachel at the Fly Shop in Redding and sent her the info on the class. She will put me in touch with a Women's Fly Club through whom we can 'channel' the funds.

And to both "LCS" and "SB" I don't think the 'kadoo's' are a bit over stated; perhaps a tad understated. To assure all on the Board are aware, Steve and Way are donating their time/efforts to this cause (Steve actually was the one who brought up the donate to youth groups idea! Way chimed right in with a huge "Right On!"). Considering the collective talents of both of these Gentlemen, we (and the kids) all owe them a HUGE "tip of the hat."

Above and beyond the call.

Fred Evans

PS: Forgot to add: I've already got the wine laid in for Saturday nights dinner ..... but you get to bring the single malts.

do you have a background in sales? wow. i am flattered by the buildup, but would definitely not classify myself as one of the world's best speycasters. i just like to fish, tinker with gear, and enjoy casting and teaching others!

i am looking forward to the class, and to meeting many of the members of the board that can make it there!

SB: if you've ever seen my abilities with an edititing machine ...

we'd never have to fear winning an Emmy. You're on!! (Actually guys this was Way's original offer; I just screwed up the posting.

The real point of this is that "seeing" what, as in a picture is worth a thousand words, your doing/not doing brings a lot to your party.

Heck, good question!!! Anyone have a small portable AC generator that you could bring? I've got more than one VCR that we could plug a video machine into, small colour tv and do 'on the beach' feed back. Could be very cool .... but we'll all 'snigger' at each other over dinner and wine.

Sharing rides to Medford?

I'll probably be driving to Medford for the clinic on Thursday afternoon. I live in Hermiston, OR. I'll be traveling I-84W to I-5S. I'd be willing to pick someone up enroute. Maybe hope to fish on Friday if conditions allow. Or could change schedule to accomodate others.
