Hello,
I have just finished watching Rivers of a Lost Coast for the second time. For anyone who has not seen this great film you owe it to yourself to do so. What I am wondering about is if there is a book that anyone can recommend that covers this golden age of west coast fly fishing somewhat in depth? I know about Russell Chatham’s great book The Angler’s Coast but I am looking for others as well. Any ideas?
Thanks

Yeah, this is a great documentary. And it elevates itself to the next level, like all really great documentaries, in being both about its nominal topic, and on the meta level but with a similar theme about the fragilty, lost of innocence and mortality of humans!

There is this: Jack Berryman, “Fly Fishing Pioneers and Legends of the Northwest”. He is in the movie. But I haven’t gotten around to reading my copy yet. I HAVE read Russell Chathams stuff and he is a wonderful essayist!

Besides Russ Chatham's Anglers Coast, there is also a book called I Know Bill Schaadt by Ben Taylor, which is a bunch of short stories by people who knew & fished with Bill. Those two books & the movie, paint a pretty good picture of how it was back in the day. Russ devoted an entire chapter, Behold the Fisherman, to his friend Bill Schaadt.

Steelhead information

Mark,

In response to your question, during the past few years since releasing our first book "The Half-Pounder a Steelhead Trout, Life History and Fly Fishing”, I have been working on a second book titled “California Winter Steelhead, Life History and Fly Fishing”. The book covers the history and origin of steelhead names, taxonomy, latest information on California steelhead genetics, and the evolution and life history of California winter steelhead. In addition, insightful information on the history of California steelhead fly fishing gleamed from early manuscripts, reports and newspapers is covered.

Chapters describe the historical and current status of California rivers and creeks from the North Coast to the Southern Coast regions including the Great Central Valley. The book covers winter steelhead fly fishing equipment including rods, reels, fly lines and leaders, casting, and successful fly presentation techniques. The final chapter details the history and current status of California steelhead conservation from its beginnings in the 1800’s. The book finishes with the history of California steelhead fly tying and includes color plates of over 100 historical and current California winter steelhead.

Similar to the half-pounder book, the California winter steelhead book will be hardback with full color photos, and limited to 500 copies printed. The manuscript is with the publisher as I write and we hope to release it late summer 2020.
