I grabbed a "head only" rio Scandi short from a clearance table recently. It came with the body and just the floating tip. Haven't fished it yet, but im wondering how much others use the intermediate and sinking tips?
So Far i have mine rigged with an airflo int poly and seems to cast well. What do you guys use with the non-floating tips? A regular leader or somewhat matching polys?
The replacement tips are not readily available so I figure id ask before ordering some.
TIA,
Dan

Size of the body dependent you could substitute a lot of things. Get close in length and weight and it should be fine.

RIO uses both 10' and 15' tips on same body from 7wt and up. They are tolerant of a little extra.. plumper friendly :)

Personally, I don't run a poly off the sink tips. No need to. 4' - 5' leader direct to fly.

A short mono leader...

I have been using short tapered mono leaders, 5' (+ or -) depending: an example would be 15" 25 lb Maxima, 15" 20 lb Maxima, 30" Maxima tippet. Cheers, Buff. And credit to Trey Coombs for the leader formula...

I have a 7 wt as well and use the sink3 and sink5 a lot with the 3 being used the most. The leader off these is between 3-5'. Off the float tip I use a standard mono leader of between one to one and a half times the rod length. I do not have the intermediate tip as, being clear, it's too shiny in the waters I fish, which is why I use Maxima Chameleon as a leader most of the time.

Great little line though.

I have the 7 and the 8wt. Great line, the 8 wt gets the most use with the intermediate, and type 3 getting most use. I also use the 15 ft rio tips up to 8ips and this also fishes very well. On the floating version I tend to use a 5 or 10ft airflo polyleader. As for leaders tend to be on the shorter side, maybe 6 to 8ft so as to get the benefit of the sinking tip

I use mostly RIO mow tips added to my short VT. The 5ft float 5ft sink sections will essentially lenthen your shooting head and allow for better fly control/ presentation. There is certain runs where I will not throw anything other than a mow tip. When achieving greater depths, I use level T-11 and T-14 and the scandi VT casts them with ease. In my opinion, this head is just a pretty-casting skagit set up. My favorte for smaller river applications!

I also use the intermediate shooting head (scandi body) with type 3, 6, and 8 15 ft leaders for slower swings on large rivers. It's quite nice, and without getting into numbers I can say with confidence It has increased my hook ups by ~1/3.
