Anybody here use the 400 gr Rio Scandi Body (ie the head only, no tip, from the 8wt SSVT) with the medium MOW tips?

Rio's chart says it should work, but it's so much lighter than the Skagit head they recommend for the medium MOWs.

anyone have experience with this combo?

I gave it a try...

I read your post and thought that you had an interesting question, so I tried it out yesterday. My old Echo TR 7130 and # 8 SSVT body and two different MOWs, 2.5 ft sink tip and 5 ft st and an iMOW with the 2.5 ft st. Fishing pocket water. Worked fine. If I knew how, I would send you the three snaps I took of some of the silvers I caught! BTW, Meiser's RPN (rod power number) for that Echo is 7.8, confirming my belief that it's a baby 8, hence the 8 wt Scandi body. Cheers, Buff. Anyone else with a "Would that work?" question...just post it and I'll go fishing for answers.

Nice! Thanks. Hopefully I can make the time to go try it for myself.
Interesting that the SSVT head at 400 grains works when the skagit head range for the med MOW tips is 475-550.
And i appreciate your willingness to take one for the team and go try it out. Sounds like it was pretty tough work ;)

I find Rio's guidelines to be a bit suspect...for the Heavy MOW tips (T14) they suggest a head weight of 575 Skagit or higher...myself and others regularly fish T14 on a 525 Skagit head and do just fine with it...in fact the 525 does reasonably well with T17 even. By that metric I think the 400 grain Scandi Body would turn over 10' of T11 reasonably well once you get used to it.
