Hi folks, just a new guy here at the forum and I have a question for all y'all. I'm just about done building me my first two-handed rod and I was told by numerous folks that learning to cast a spey rod is best done with a floating line.
My question is would the mid-spey be a good choice in the beginning? The rod is a Forecast 14' 9/10. I am planning on using it for fishing the Sky mostly, but perhaps when I get comfortable with it I might try the Skagit. First I was thinking perhaps buying the mid spey w/tips, but I don't know if this would be a good choice for a beginner. Any thoughts?
Perhaps when I get more competent with it I can put a braided loop on the end and buy the Rio tips.

Yeah I've been trying to do that for awhile now, but most the time I'm working up here in the shop on Sat. and the one Saturday I don't work my wife has to work her one saturday per month. So I'm pretty much winging it on my own somewhat.
I'm going to try and get down there on one of these Fridays and just have a chit chat with'em down there. I figure that can be worth it's weight in gold.

Yeah I've been trying to decide whether I should try the 725gr 9/10, the 875gr 10/11 or even take it up to the 1100gr. 11/12, all are Mid-Spey.

I haven't found much info for the 14'er as I have found for the shorter sticks, that's why I figured I would just ask see what y'all have to say about it.

I appreciate y'all insights.

Thanks flytyer...that's what I have been wondering. I've been fishing single handed rods for ever, but never tried two-handed rods untill now. So I didn't know what grain weight would most likely be too much for my given rod. At least with the rods I have I tend to stay with the designated line weights, but I am constantly reading that speys differ in this aspect.

Thanks to everybody!!!
