Anyone have any insight on why some ties have winging equally distributed around the tube, and others have a top and bottom winging arrangement? I've heard various theories, but other than allowing one to see the body materials better, I haven't heard any reasons that made sense.

Phil,

I suspect the biggest reason most of the tube flies are tied in the round has to do with them rolling around into all sorts of attitudes when being fished. By tying them in the round, no matter which way it is rotated in the water, the fish see it the same profile.
