Similar to Juro's post asking for rec's on reels for the reel hogging lines-

I plan on purchasing the 8/9 XLT and need a reel that holds "lots" of 30# backing (200 is ideal but could get away with less). I was going to go with the Tioga 12 LA (I like Tiogas) but Mark B. says too small and suggested the 12 regular spool. Everyone says go large arbor, so I chose the Lamson Velocity 4 (it seems to hold more though I can still change this selection). Does anyone know how much 30# backing would fit this reel/line configuration? Or should I forgo the large arbor and take Mark's earlier recommendation? BTW, I just can't afford the Bauer and the likes.

Thanks,
ws

Go with Mark's recommendation.l

He has all the lines, uses them, etc., and etc. I'm sure he's restrung a reel or two to 'discover' just how much backing a reel, with these lines will hold.

The xlt's are chubby buggers and fill a lot of reel space in and by themselves.:whoa:

mythical steelhead

just a thought--do we really need 200 yards of backing when we're talking steelhead? Spoiled, I get to fish for some of the biggest, strongest and fastest steelhead on the planet, and on reels with 150yards of backing I have rarely come close to being concerned. I've hooked maybe 1/2 dozen fish that really made me nervous in the past 8 years, and I solved those problems by getting out of the river and running. While on big water, big fish summer run rivers 100 yards is probably too little for comfort, 200 yards is overkill I think. 150 yards seems just about right. Most of my reels carry 150 yards of either 30# Dacron or 50# gsp. On a few of the reels I have for saltwater use I have over 200 yards of gsp, but that is simply to make it easier for them to do double duty as Spey and saltwater reels--if I knew they would only be used for steelhead I'd stick with 150 yards of backing.
