Haven't been tying at all..... been working on the platforms. Here's the first batch started from bare wire, barb cut, shaped, & heat-treated. All ready blackening. It's very very addicting working with the different shapes and especially how each shape's bend flexes once heat treated.
A special thanks to Brent for making this possible.

Very cool.

I played around a little bit with reworking hooks, but only a few. Hard to find the time, and to be honest, it's very intimidating.

Great work, thanks for posting these.

how bout a sbs?

I have no intention of ever making my own hooks, but I am quite curious as to how its done. Question: Did you create the point and barb before or after creating the bend?

Does anyone remember those old Herters hooks that were so dang hard they were brittle? I'm glad my memory is fading on the number of times I discovered I was casting a pointless hook after a simple tick on a rock. Hence, a bit of warning - don't harden your hooks 'to the max' lest you create brittle hooks. I believe those Herters hooks were made by Sealey in England. Modern hook makers seem to have this hardening thing down pretty good - few bend outs and no breaks in recent years.

I'll put something together this weekend for a SBS. Its an interesting process. There's a good SBS done a few years ago. The barb is cut first, then shaping of the spear, then hook shape, heat treating, and finally the finish. I started with reshaping big mustad bait hooks then got one of Brent's barb cutters. And off to the races.

I too would love an sbs here. I have been playing with hooks the last couple months but I'm yet to get a batch all the way to paint (with the exception of one bad turnout) I'm mostly curious of the gold color of your wire and what you are referring to with the oil bath...? Great work! These look awesome!
