Went to the NU last Friday for my annual (since 2006) trip. Was given 10 mins notice to evacuate Norman’s Dogwood Motel. Burning pine needles landing on my rig as I was leaving. Inciweb shows the Dogwood right in the middle of the burnt area so thoughts and prayers to Norman, Glide and Idleyld families and fire teams. Looks like Steamboat is still OK.

Decided to come to Bend to find another river (I am on vacation for next week) and decided to head to the Clearwater on Sat. for the week.
Don’t know the first thing about it. I’ve done some research here and on line. However still a lot of holes im what I know:

Questions:

1. Where is the recommended place to stay (town and motel)?
2. I’ll be wading/swinging and a stop off at Red Shed is what people seem to recommend. I’d welcome any other starting points/suggestions on where to go
3. Licenses: Do I need anything other than ID fish lic and steelhead card? (E.g. reservation permit?)

18 hr. Drive to SF aftwrwards but need to get my hit.

North Umpqua before the fire:

Just heard this morning that Dogwood is still standing. Steamboat was as of yesterday at 4, though I don't know current conditions.

The fires have devastated so much of western Oregon.

Like any similar situation, only time will tell. Reliable info is hard to get in the middle of events. We spent part of yesterday at Level 2 evac prep, and then settled back to Level 1. Spent a good share of the day checking maps for current updates.

I was down there fishing and camping ten days ago. So much has changed so fast.

This is heart breaking news. I hope you find some good water and safe conditions.

If you go to the Clearwater River - I've stayed at the Konkolville Motel in Orifino. Last time I was there (3 years ago) it was well run, clean and nice rooms, good location, and reasonable cost. The owners were very nice. I have no idea if they are even open. Definitely, give Poppy at Red Shed a call. He's a great guy and a straight shooter - he'll give you the real skinny. Best of luck and stay safe!!

This is helpful. I was looking at that motel so great to hear an opinion. Thanks!

Eamonnm, Sorry to hear you had to leave the NU. I was recently there. I'm holding out hope for The Dogwood and the community.
Here's some info from my travels there.
1. Orofino hotels: The Konkolville (a short drive from downtown), & the White Pine are standard hotels. There is a fancier Best Western in town which has a restaurant, and a run you can fish out the door.
2. Talk to Poppy & Dale at the Red Shed. Take note of were people are fishing, and where cars are parked. Check them out when they are not occupied. Plenty of good water from Lewiston to Kamiah.
3. You can get a Reservation license which allows you to fish above the casino. It is cheaper and is available at the casino gas station. If you want to fish below the casino, you can get a couple Idaho 3 day licenses, which include the necessary Steelhead tags.
It's a big river, but just look for the water features that Steelhead like and fish it. They seem to like sparse flies. The G.B Skunk and Steelhead Coachman have done well for me, as well as others. I'll be up there in a couple weeks. Tight lines.

Happy to help. When we stayed there, that motel was pretty much a fisherman's mecca. They had a few outside gas grills and I think at the time they had a cook your own steak special for a decent price (if your into steak). We did find that Orifino lacked good dinner options. At the time Subway and the burger at the bowling alley were the best bets - pretty sad. Hopefully, that's changed some. The motel did have a continental breakfast, but not sure if that will be offered with Covid-19. And of course, the Red Shed is one of the best well-stocked fly shops on the planet! Just love visiting Poppy at the shed! And, then there's the Clearwater River - big, beautiful swing water! Have a great trip!

Thanks! Booked with Lisa and Ray. Still have the steak dinner/baked potato/salad option (or combination thereof). Continental breakfast is now courtyard breakfast.
I have a full camp kitchen so I am good to go on food.

Looking forward to red shed heard a lot about it.

Orofino is unlikely to make the “Traveling Gourmet’s Tour.”;)

When we used to travel out to fish from our (then) home in Arkansas, we always stayed at the Konkolville. It changed hands a few years ago, but the new owners are just as nice and accommodating as the former owners were. They cater to hunters and fishermen this time of year.

If you get tired of your own cooking (the motel has a full kitchen for guest’s use) you can get some pretty good food at the deli counters at the grocery stores.

Dale and Poppy will take care of you and make you feel welcome at the Red Shed.

Hope you have a great time!

The restaurant adjacent to the BW motel in Orifino has an excellent dinner menu. Decent wine selection also.

Thanks @Bob Rodgers and @Maupite. Been fishing hard. The Red Shed advice was to stay below Cherrylane Bridge. Nothing so far bit lots of great water. It is a bit of a drive down river, but the motel lives up to the hype. Currently managed by Lisa and Ray and it is very clean and well set up.

Hey thanks for sharing that article about Norman. I’ve been thinking about him a lot. I couldnt say I know him well at al, but the 3 times we’ve stayed at the Dogwood were all great. He was always a real pleasure to deal with, and a great guy to just chat with about the area. I have a hard time fathoming the impact of such a loss, but I do hope that he will be able to re-open again soon. Of course there are others who fared even worse in these fires, and we still have a couple more months to worry about more. Very sad times, so I guess we have to take whatever good news we can pull from the ashes
