Here's an email I rec'd from a Nova Scotia fisherman

I have been informed by the Department of Fisheries & Oceans (DFO) that there will be a delay in the opening of the Nova Scotia Recreational Salmon Angling Season which was scheduled to open on June 1.A variation order is now being drawn up to indicate this. DFO has been in consultations with the First Nations Kwilmu'kw Maw-klusuaqn (
A variation KMK), also known as Mi'kmaq Rights Initiative, and another meeting is in the planning stage.

This will impact salmon angling on the Margaree, North and North Aspey Rivers which normally open on June 1st.

DFO is unable to provide a date when salmon angling will be permitted for recreational anglers.

I do not know what the negotiations involve.

Short Title



0. This Order may be cited as the Maritimes Region Close Time Variation Order 2012-053.



Variation



2. The close times as fixed by section 61 of the Maritime Provinces Fishery Regulations for waters or portions of waters set out in items 63 to 193 of Schedule VII thereto are hereby varied so that no person shall angle for salmon in the waters of a river set out in the Schedule to this Order during the close time set out in the Schedule for that river.

Pretty upset here... Can't believe our Canadian government does not have the balls to stand up to this foolishness!!! Yes there are certain rivers in Nova Scotia that do not meet the required minimum spawning requirements, but when you look at the Margaree River and the River Philliph where these rivers greatly exceed the minimum spawning requirements. Why shut the whole province down, shut down the rivers that there is a problem with, not the ones that exceed minimum spawning requirements, this is so crazy. The community of Margaree barely survives as it is, now take out the thousands of fisherman that spend thousands of dollars in this area and see what businesses survive?

Hi Brian,

This is taken from Danny Ripley's Facebook page who has been fighting this stuff forever on the River Philliph.

The CBC article mentioned that the Assembly of Nova Scotia Mi'kmaq Chiefs applied for a judicial review in federal court. Basically they say the none aboriginal fisheries violate their constitutional rights and only they should be allowed to access the resource. DFO is granting their request and coupled with the amendments to the fisheries act that are set to pass Thursday in the omnibus budget bill DFO will be grant the native community the ability to sell sport fish and they DFO will be able to transfer quota to aboriginals and profit from the transfer thus subsidizing budget cuts to their department by the Harper government.

So basically it is saying that the guy that pays his taxes and buys a fishing license has no say anymore in how this country is run...

Pretty Disgusting situation we`re in here in Nova Scotia.I was looking forward to a good year on the Margaree.This is totally DISGUSTING.DFO and the "powers that be" are really stirring up a hornets nest if ya want my opinion.I can really see some confrontations on some rivers,between the natives and non natives.There is no consideration given to the guys that make a living selling fishing gear,guys that supplement their income by guiding salmon fishermen,the people that rent out cabins.ALL paying taxes on their business.C`MON DFO,Cmon Mr.Harper.Get it together.A great species of fish are gonna be wiped out.Businesses are gonna close.

I am in NB and I can't believe this is happening ? After documents where released of increasing return's and the value's of atlantic salmon and their local economic value for tourism etc ? I know NS dosn't have the biggest of run's compared to others but still from what I understood they where getting healthier every year for the past couples year. Apparently last year was a spectacular year and now to hear this happening it's plain and simply wrong.

The meeting of DFO’s ZMAC 20 Advisory Committee has been scheduled for Wednesday, June 6, 2012 at the St. Mary’s River Salmon Association, Sherbrooke, NS. The meeting will begin at 10:30 AM

Thanks Salar-1 for the info. I probably spent 3 hours online Sunday trying to dig up anything after the rumor hit my mailbox. Glad to have the chance to hear the interview despite the mood it sets.
I hope to hear of a good turnout on the 6th. Wish I could attend but am away. Will definitely keep my ears open.

Atlantic Salmon Meeting

What a crazy time to have a meeting with fisherman, most of us work!!! Have it a time when people can make it, like evenings or weekends... I'm sure if it was on the weekend we could get a number of fisherman from PEI to go to it and put our 2 cents worth in...

Monsterfish, I presume it will be just be around the corner before NB & Quebec will run into the same problem... Once the parties involved see that NS can get away with it, I guarantee the rest of them will try to get their share also!!!

So Stupid, our governments need to smarten the heck up...

Delayed Salmon Season

Just got an email from the ASF regarding the situtation in Nova Scotia . It seems the First Nation people are concerned about the managment of the salmon stocks in Nova Scotia and are concerned that the stocks will not be healthy enough to get the allotment . Over 90% of the salmon caught in Nova Scotia are released by the recreational anglers . We have fished on the Margaree for 16 fall seasons and have never seen a fish taken buy a recreational angler but have been present to watch First Nation " fisherman" snag salmon with large weighted spoons . Last fall we were present to watch a netting of the Hatchery Pool by First Nation members and my wife and I were sickened by the sight . I thought of all people they would treat these netted fish with respect but they did not . Sorry for the rant but this is ridiculous . Jeff

PM announces new Hunting and Angling Advisory Panel

Prime Minister Stephen Harper today announced the organizations that will be a part of a newly created Hunting and Angling Advisory Panel, which will help inform conservation efforts in Canada. The announcement was made at Canada’s first ever National Fish and Wildlife Conservation Congress in Ottawa.

“Hunting, angling and trapping are central to the livelihood, recreation and tradition of many Canadians and are an important part of many local and regional tourism industries”, said Prime Minister Harper. “The members of the new Hunting and Angling Advisory Panel will help ensure that future conservation practices – including the protection of endangered species – are based on input from Canadians who have a long tradition of conservation. This fulfills a commitment made by our Government last year.”

The panel – which is made up of representatives from provincial and territorial hunting and angling associations, as well as conservation and related industry associations – will provide advice to the government to help ensure decisions on issues such as endangered species, wetland protection and nature conservation benefit from a balanced perspective.

The panel will serve as a long-term advisory body and will report directly to the Minister of the Environment to ensure government decisions are based on science and balanced advice

UPDATE: The Salmon season is now going to begin June, 4th.

I do not know what happened in the discussions, but we have our season back. :hihi: Good to hear the rivers will be protected by fly fisherman.

“I would like to confirm that there will be no further delays to the opening of the salmon angling season in Nova Scotia.

“The season will open next week, the week of June 4th.”

I agree with PKG to the extent that FN people through out the Maritimes work hand in hand for the betterment of returning adult Atlantics. They must and do understand first hand that more breeding fish mean more jobs on the Gaspe, in New Foundland/Labrador, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick etc. ASF has in large part forged this alliance with FN, DFO and recreational fishers.

Hey let's take a breath and be grateful for all the well meaning people who harvest fish legaly as well as those who enforce and protect fishery regulations. There seems to be a very good thing happening on he Atlantic coast these days and our season has just begun. I'll be back to the Margaree this fall and am glad to here that the river is open sooner than later.
