I’ve never tied a fly so please bare with the newbie question and ones to follow.

which type of hackle do u use for hackle tip feather wings on flies like the winters hope and orange heron? Do u use hen or rooster? Saddle or cape? I am going to guess and say rooster cape but if I’m wrong please correct me. And also, do u buy the expensive capes from whiting or do u find adequate feathers on subsequently less expensive capes and saddles?

The Whiting 4B rooster necks are a good value and look great.

Chinese rooster capes are reasonably priced and do the job well.
