Hello all. I joined the group here for a very specific reason. I love tying, and I want to get better at it. Groups on facebook are 90% jokers, with a smattering of talent here and there. A friend referred me here, said there were serious tyers and anglers here. From the pics I have seen thus far, he was right. I have been tying for two years, primarily steelhead and salmon flies. I have taken tying classes with April Vokey and most recently, Dec Hogan. Although I have tied tube flies and on senyo shanks with stingers, I love tying on really nice hooks. A.J.'s are my favorites. Here wre a few of my most recent attempts. If I had to pick an Achilles heel, I would say it is wings for me. My heads are getting better, and I'm learning to be more sparse with the materials, but my wings, especially feather wings, need help. I appreciate all feedback and constructive criticism. Thanks!

Welcome to the best section on the Speypages :)
Some excellent people here that frequent this section , all to willing to help out , answer questions and offer encouragement .
A great place to be !!

As for wings , something to remember , keep the forward section of the body thin . Taper from the mid-section down towards the hook , or just keep it thin . This will allow the wings to follow the lines of the body and set nicely .
You can still pick out the dubbing and give the illusion of bulk . It will come with practice and patience , just keep tying :)

First off welcome you have come to the right place. I may be mistaken but is that a Christmas Story leg lamp on your tying desk? Very sweet!

The flies look great and the more you tie the better you get. This forum has the best SH and salmon tiers of any forum out there and you will pick up much needed information along the way.

Again welcome!

Welcome aboard. I look forward to your contributions. With the excellent advise above so far and the tutelage under your belt you are off with a head-start. What can I possibly add to that!? :)

Oh - Nice work station you have set-up. Avid Angler sticker stands out to me because I used to drop-in whenever fishing the Snohomish/Stillaguamish systems

Welcome to the forum!

Nice ties, you're off to a good start- except I can see one problem... that tying station is too neat and organized!!!

There should be stuff piled about, hooks all over, and pieces of fur and feathers lofting in the air every time someone walks past you too fast!

Again, welcome, and looking forward to more posts!

I mentioned the lamp, saw the bong but thought I would skip that part but now that it's out so be it.

I guess I say nice bong to be polite!:chuckle: Have not seen one of those in many a years! Wonder if it would help my tying at all?:hihi:

Thanks fellas! Yes, that is a christmas story lamp. Good eye! I am excited to be on board here. Like I said, some of the flies I have seen posted are absolutely amazing, and from reading a few threads, it appears everyone is very helpful. I live in the pnw, my home rivers being the puget sound "s" rivers, and Avid Angler is my local shop. Those cats are fantastic. Andrew Grillos has been very helpful to me, and even gave me a private tying lesson. Ben, John, Brita, and Ryan have been very helpful as well. Their spey clinics at ben howard are awesome too. I would reccomend the avid angler to anyone. Thanks again! :smokin:

I didnt even realise the water pipe was in the photo. Oops. I guess y'all have got my number dialed in now! I personally don't drink anymore, but I used to be a big bourbon guy. If it wasnt made in kentucky, I had little interest. These days I keep it green. If it offensive I can remove it. I don't want to start off on the wrong foot....
