I have a child starting college in Portland and wish to combine a visit with a bit of fishing. When I say fishing near Portland, I could drive ...say 4-6 hours away to fish a couple days and come back to Portland. I am a novice in regards to steelhead and speycasting. So:

1 Between November and May which rivers would you look at?? Ie prime months at those rivers.
2 Favorite guides or shops to call for guides near those rivers.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Fishing out of Portland.

The easy one would be the Sandy River east of Portland (call flyfishusa for current info/solid information. A bit further east you have the Deschutes, this time of the year fish low for Salmon and early fall summer run Steelhead. Come September head up stream towards Mac's Canyon.

Can't really tell you about the rivers west of Portland as I've never fished same. The other option is to cross over into Washington State; lots of rivers flow into the Columbia River. That said, Washington's fishing regulations (when/where/for what) can change day to day! Go on line to the Fish and Game web site (or call) to assure you're current.
