Like others on this string I'm trying the Spey for the first time. Bought one of the Redingtons (12/6 - 7/8line) and was wondering about the best line for a beginner.

I'm pretty good with a singlehand rod and fish primarily largemouths and stripers on open lakes. I fish from a boat along treelines so a Spey makes sense when I don't have the room to backcast. (Actually could Steeple cast or whatever but had to have an excuse to pick up a Spey).

I've been reading this string for awhile and see differing opinions as to best lines for specific purposes...but if you were teaching yourself with this rod, what would you line it with? Thanks and Best Fishes.

7/8 Airflo Delta floater with a 15 foot Rio spey leader. They truly are the easiest spey lines to cast. I'd also get an X-fast sinking Airflo "Trout" poly leader for getting down a bit. If you contact Mike at www.redshedflyshop.com I'm sure he'll get you exactly what you need. And definitely put a braided loop at the end of the fly line for quick leader changes.

Any of the mid-belly lines in 7/8 (RIO MidSpey, SA Mastery, Airflow Long Delta) would be my first choice because the slighlty longer belly (65' or so) will help you in the long run develop good technique. The short belly lines in 7/8 (RIO Windcutter [which is the 7/8/9], Delta Spey, SA Short Spey) would be my second choice because although it is easier to cast the shorter 55' foot belly, it can lead to technique problems because it is easier to move the shorter belly when the anchor is misplaced or there is too much line stick.

Just pick which of these you like best, think you will like best, or find on sale somewhere and use it.

Thanks gents for the great help. I put a 7/6 Delta on it and I think that's the ticket. This line is bringing some life to this rod. Now for countless hours of practice.... appreciate the help!

I know you will be happy with the 7/8 delta, that line suits this rod perfectly.
