I've always heard the line rating system in UK is different then whats used in North America. What is the difference? Where do scandinavian rods fit? is the difference even big enough to matter?

Its all over the map at the moment Gord.
Which is why a lot of rod makers now put 'grain weights' on their rods. Even worse with 2hander lines ... a hundred choices now? Ahhh the good old days where all you had was a full floater (probably ordered out of England) and a home made chop up sink tip.
That's all you needed and I find no reason to change my mind.
