Hi all,

First post here and brand new to spey, so I hope I don't break any cardinal rules.

I just bought a 13' 7 wt Redington Prospector from eBay with Rio Skagit Max Versitip line (500 grain) and floating, intermediate and full sink T11 tips. I'll be fishing coastal rivers in WA.

The guy at my fly shop told me that the line/tips are a bad match, but this fine gentleman has been known to upsell on occasion so I wanted to check with the masses. Any opinions on what I should do?

I've got a ton to learn, so I appreciate the help!

Hi BSR, and welcome to the forum!
Your hunch is correct, to question the "fine gentleman" at that shop.
Rio lines has charts on their website, to show recommended lines for many different rods:
http://www.rioproducts.com/RIO-Spey-Line-Recs.pdf
Scroll down to your rod, and you'll see they recommend Skagit lines from 475 to 525 grains, so your 500 grain line is right in the middle. Sounds like a perfect match to me. (Read the note at the top of the list, explaining the two different grain recommendations.)
