Feds to reopen herring fishery despite objections by First Nations and DFO scientists.

Why?, because DFO minister is a buddy with multibillionaire Jim Pattison, who owns processing and fishery fleet.

“For the three [herring fishing] areas showing signs of recovery, it is recommended that they remain closed in 2014,” a DFO memo concluded.

The minister was not immediately available for comment late Friday.

Sadly, this seems to be the state of affairs in many jurisdictions.

Reading about this a few days back.

This reporting even hit my small corner of Southern Oregon. Puget Sound appears to be in a similar situation.

Following three hours of high stakes negotiations in a federal fisheries office with locked-in Heiltsuk leaders on Denny Island, a DFO regional director emerged to an emotional First Nations crowd Monday night, saying she needed to check with her bosses in Eastern Canada first about opening or closing the controversial herring fishery.

So despite dire warning from DFO scientist , not to open controversial herring fisherythe regional DFO director has to confirm with corporate politburo of Harper Regime, if this is OK to close controversial herring fishery. Now Harper cohorts has to consult of Jim Patison , one of the wealthiest man in Canada, who owns commercial fishery before making the final decision........

In a stunning reversal, the federal government caved in to Heiltsuk First Nation's demands to close commercial fishing of herring near Bella Bella in northern B.C.

The re-opening of the herring fishery last year sparked controversy, as leaked emails revealed that government scientists had recommended that the fishery remain closed.

More updates to come. Comment from the DFO is pending......:Eyecrazy::Eyecrazy:

Finally a Sazan post with a happy ending!

Glad to see that the herring will get another year before the nets are back in.

All forage fish fisheries need to end, along with krill. Where shooting ourselves in the foot only to cut of our legs. We have messed up the hole food chain and the end result wont be good.
