I need to balance a long a SH rod. I was thinking about wrapping some of this lead tape on my reel seat right behind the reel but I don't want to get tacky glue all over reel seat. I don't know anything about this product since I don't golf. What kind of adhesive does this tape have? Will it leave a gummy residue on the reel seat when I take it off?

why not run down to a golf shop? I'll bet they'd be more than happy to answer questions and/or help out.

I don't golf, but from what I've seen, they're a pretty nice lot. Kinda like fishermen!

Acetone is not something I'm going to put on this rod. It's an old EC Powell bamboo. I will have to come up with another idea to balance the rod.

Looks like I might neeeed to buy another fly reel!

Thank you for your help.

Lead Core Trolling Line

My single bamboo is tip heavy with the reel I have on it. Lead core trolling line on the arbor prior to backing is the cure for me with a few reels I own. Zero residue and easily removed.

lead tape

for what it's worth, I've used lead tape many times on golf clubs. It sticks with a vengeance. It can be very difficult to remove (think scraping it off). I've got some on clubs that are 25 years old with tape down on the sole of the club. It's worn from contact with the turf but it is not pealing off. That's why, for it's intended purpose, it works great. No idea what solvents would take it off. Never tried. Hope that's of some use.

I definitely wouldn't use anything that requires solvent to remove. E.C. Powell reelseats have a bakelite filler that I think would be vulnerable to solvents. Maybe you could wrap something like self-adhering medical tape as an underwrap, then the lead tape over that.

Better yet, get an old Hardy Perfect if you want balance and a reel from the same era as the rod. They have enough weight to balance even a 9 1/2-footer.

I've used the golf tape although time didn't actually stick it. I wrapped it around the rod and the secured it with a rubber band.

I've also wrapped some lead taped on the arbor of my reel before I put the backing on...again I used a rubber band to secure it.
