I think the 3 might be a little small. I have a 4.5 on my 9wt sage. The long bellied line I have now, an SA XLT, just fits on it. My rule of thumb has been what ever the line weight is, go to a reel size that handles two sizes up. For instance, 9 wt. rod/line goes on a reel sized for an 11 weight capacity. For the longer bellied lines like the XLT and new Rio Grandspey, I went for the 12 wt. capacity reel, that way I have enough room for backing.
