I have recently acquired a used TFO Professional 12'6" 6 wt and was looking for some input on a line selecting a line. To help, I am a newbie to spey casting as I have never casted double handed. I will be fishing small to medium rivers, targeting eastern steelheads and the odd brown. I do not plan to be tossing flies tied on larger than size 2 hook. I was thinking of a Rio Windcutter II with a versitip line. Any input or suggestions would be great!

Will you be fishing large rivers like the Muskegon, or small rivers like the Pere Marquette? The size of the river matters. IMHO, for all around fishing ease, I recommend shooting heads --see posts by peter-s-c -- but they are expensive. For a lower price, but at the cost of some fishability, use Skagit lines. I have them both, but not by choice, rather through ignorance. I bought Skagit lines before I knew anything about shooting heads. Had I been more informed, I would have bought shooting heads only.

My $0.02.
