Ice in the Guides

Did you all know that it's harder to shoot line with ice in the guides?

Winter is settling in with a vengeance here in Michigan which has me wondering about the problem. When trout fishing I bend the rod and suck the junk off. That becomes a little bit harder once the tip gets more than 11 feet from your mouth.

What's the answer?

I read somewhere that rubbing Vaseline (petroleum jelly) in the tip top & guides helps. Give it a try and see if it works. It won't hurt your line.

I just leave it in there.

Casting a long line with no stripping or shooting is the way I do it.....
Stanley's Ice off past

I would seriously stop putting MI river water in your mouth. From first hand experience, GIARDIA sucks really bad.
Especially if youre sucking on 6th street flavored popscicles !!! (mmmmm boy! is that corn i taste????)

Loon outdoors makes "Stanleys Ice off Paste". You should be able to get it at Great Lakes or any reputable shop.

Its basic silicone in a half dollar size plastic tin. If you smear guides and the foot area in the car before you go out, it will last at least a good hour in temps between 20 and 30. When you reapply it streamside, ensure the guides are as close to dry as possible.

I've used it in regular temps, too-- the light coating that rubs onto your flyline is safe, and makes line shoot like greased lightning!
Petroleum-based products like vaseline (recommended above) smeared on your fingers; (which touch your flies)--stink bad-- and will chemically react and degrade the resins off PVC flylines over time.

The tree-hugging option is to use beeswax-based stuff on your line and lips--and support mom and pop companies like carmex or burts bees.
(And at the bench, beeswax is an old trick for sneaking some 'mojo' into the dubbing. !!! )

Tracy's used to carry tubs of silicone paste to smear on anchor lines to prevent freezing; that way the line will hold in the jamb cleat.
But, I digress.

Stanley's is the only product that will ever be needed. Great stuff.

Wow. Looks like I should have put an option on for "coating the guides."

Caihlen, do you have issues leaving ice on the guides once you get a fish on? I ask because I've had trout break me off before because the line was froze in the guides.
I dress my floating line and used Stanley's Ice Off on the guides. I can be prone to dipping my guides in the current and/or holding my "warm" hand around the guides to thaw them out.

They don;t really ice up because I'm not drawing water in all the time stripping.

Dip

Thats what I do, dip them in the water. the water is generally warmer than the air and every now and again a dip clears them. But I have to agree that some form of silicon/vaselin would last that bit longer.;)
why cake gunk in your guides???? pick guides clean. don't tape the last ferrule. pull apart to reach tip top. repeat as needed. this works in the most brutal conditions.

Caihien and Voodoofly have the right method in my view. Long belly line, minimal stripping, and when one has to, pick the ice out of the guides. I have found that by fishing long belly lines and not stripping much it's possible to fish a long ways down the run before ice becomes a problem.
Other...

I find that my guides are a lot less frosty when I don't misrepresent my casting prowess, and listen when I'm being taught something.

:hihi:
I forgot to mention that the best way to clean out the ice in the guides is to hook up with a good steelie and have it blow the ice out on the first big run. :):):)
Second on the Ice Off Paste

Only delays the inevatable but works to extend time time between picking off ice build up and a reapplication. If it's hovering just below the freezing point a quick swish in the river and a shake or two of the rod.

If it's in the teens I'm hovering over a few holes jigging for bluegill and crappie. Yummy. :D

Yo Bro,

Where's that pic from a few years ago when you got your Highlander from Bob?

What was it 16F that day?

Was it Aberlour or Auchentoshan we were keeping ourselves ice free with?

When the temp gets below 28F, I say bag it and head to Founders. Its only a few blocks away from the river and I find it fixes way more than any ice-paste ever will.

Jamey, you have so much common sense!!! My warming shed is within walking distance also, most of the time. And, they don't care if I've got waders on. Definitely not a fashion boutique. :hihi::hihi::hihi:

We were testing the Winter Authority lines from Simon that day.
It was cold.
Hippie chicks to thaw reels.

Wow, that neon Founder's sign brings back good memories of the old North Monroe pub. I don't miss the dense cloud of smoke, but I loved the old site.

Come to think of it, Dirty Bastard might be thick enough to coat your guides with... But I can imagine the beat down I'd get if any of you saw me pouring DB into the Rogue.

Actually I've got a couple of real fond memories from playing gigs at the old building:

-we were playing a gig there in late September 3 years ago and a couple came in wearing waders. So I had asked them the "genius" question: "Hey did you guys just get done fishing at 6th street?" No I think they just came from the 1913 room

-the other fond memory was: we were loading in for new years gig there, and there was some creepy guy using I think it was like the community computer there. I don't know if anyone remembers that computer from the old building. Any rate, we had to politely asked him to move so we could set up while he was looking at internet porn in plain sight of everyone. Memories.........
