What is the best knot for joining the running line to the backing?

Whammo!
What type of running line are you asking about - mono, coated with mono core, coated with a braided core, or just braid (eg braided mono) ?

And what type of backing will you be connecting to that running line - std braid, mono, or GSP ?

I use a braided loop on the back of my runners , works for me. To say the truth not manny times have I been to the backing with a fish. I think in 30 years I can only recall once. Blood knot on loop, or is it twisty knot.

(I never want to lose any fish!)
Neither do I, but I would be more concerned with a fish towing yards, and yards of running line. Priorities. Good advise given above.

Bimini in the Dacron to the Ridge loop. It started out as an adventure to see if I could tie the terrifying twist; then it became a ritual. With good direction, the not isn't really that bad. It just takes a little time to twist, twist, twist.

I also use a bimini but don't think it is really an issue and an albright should work fine - I expect if there is that much line out, you will not really be able to put that much pressure on the fish and this is not a knot that should fail first - I might question your use of 20# backing if you are concerned but make your tippet light enough as that is where you want your system to fail if it is going to
