I'm in complete agreement with Aaron on hooks and that one should always size the fly to the hook being tied upon. To answer your other question on sizes for spey flies, the smallest hook I use is the Alec Jackson Spey Hook #5, and the largest is the McNeese Blue Heron #2. Keep in mind that Glasso tied his spey flies on #1/0 low-water Sealy down to #2 low-water Sealy hooks with a #1 used most of the time and I find the Alec Jackson #3 to be very close in shank length to the old Sealy low-water #1.
