Actually, they can be converted, but you need very thorough instructions and a lot of time and patience to do so. Craig sent me the instructions, but I don't normally send them out as anyone who tries it is almost assuredly going to end up with a mess of parts. Therefore, you're probably best off treating them as non-convertible. The current Solitude website has a letter to Harris Solitude owners on its Customer Service page. In that letter is the contact information for the guy (I think his name is Bill Wheeler) who has all the remaining parts and is doing the service work. I would start there. Bill Archuleta has pulled off enough miracles over the years that I would think he'd be able to do it also. The new Solitude reels convert much more easily.
Thanks I have emailed him but no reply yet. This is a very nice reel but not much good for me right now so I hope he can do it for me. Thanks much for the advice and if all else fails I may contact you and give it a try.
